Why Your Local Business Isn't Showing Up in AI Recommendations (and How to Fix It)

Why doesn't my local business show up when someone asks AI for a recommendation?

AI assistants skip you because they can't confirm who you are, where you are, or what you do. When the machine isn't sure, it recommends the plumber down the street it can confirm. That's the whole game.

Your customers already ask ChatGPT and Gemini things like "best HVAC company near me" and "emergency dentist open now." If you're invisible in those answers, you're not losing a ranking. You're losing the job.

I've watched this happen in audit after audit. The business has a decent website, real reviews on Google, trucks on the road. And the assistant still names three competitors instead. Here's why, and here's the fix list.

What makes AI assistants trust a local business?

Trust comes from agreement. When your name, address, phone, hours, and services say the same thing in every place a machine can read, the assistant treats you as a confirmed entity. When those details disagree, it hedges and moves on.

There are four places this breaks for local service businesses. Miss one and you get skipped.

1. Missing or broken LocalBusiness schema

Most local sites have zero structured data. The homepage looks fine to a human and reads as a blank to a machine.

LocalBusiness schema is the JSON-LD block that spells out your name, address, phone, hours, geo coordinates, and service area in a format the assistants parse instantly. No schema means the AI has to guess from messy page text. It usually guesses wrong, or it skips you to be safe.

Google's own LocalBusiness structured data guidance lays out exactly which fields matter. Dentists, use the Dentist type. Plumbers, use Plumber. The more specific the type, the clearer the signal.

2. Inconsistent NAP across directories

NAP means name, address, phone. If your Google Business Profile says "Suite 200" and Yelp says "Ste. 200" and your website drops the suite entirely, the machine sees three businesses, not one.

This is the quiet killer. I've seen a roofing company lose every AI recommendation in its city because an old phone number was still floating around on four directories. The assistant couldn't tell which record was real.

Assistants cross-check Google Business Profile, Yelp, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, and the big industry directories. They need those records to match, character for character.

3. Weak review signals

Reviews are proof you exist and proof you're good. A business with eleven reviews from 2023 reads as stale. A business with a steady drip of recent, detailed reviews reads as alive and trusted.

The assistants read the words inside reviews, not the star count. A review that says "fixed our water heater same day in Mesa" tells the machine what you do and where. That's gold. A pile of "Great service!" five-stars tells it almost nothing.

4. Thin service and location pages

One page that says "We offer plumbing, HVAC, and electrical across the valley" can't win. It's thin. It doesn't answer anything.

AI assistants cite pages that actually answer a specific question for a specific place. "Emergency water heater repair in Tempe" needs its own page with real detail, pricing context, and the questions customers ask before they call. Give every service and every city its own real page.

How do I fix it so AI starts recommending me?

Work the four signals in order. Schema first because it's fast, then directories, then reviews, then page depth. Here's the concrete list.

  1. Add LocalBusiness schema to your homepage and every location page. Name, address, phone, hours, geo coordinates, service area. Use the most specific type for your trade. Run it through the Schema.org validator before you ship it.
  2. Fix your NAP everywhere. Pull every listing of your business and make the name, address, and phone identical. Kill dead listings and old phone numbers. Start with Google Business Profile, then Yelp, Apple Business Connect, and Bing Places.
  3. Build a review flow. Ask every happy customer the day the job ends. Reply to all of them. Nudge people to mention the service and the city in their own words.
  4. Rewrite thin pages. One page per service, one page per city you serve. Answer the real questions. Add the detail a nervous customer wants before they pick up the phone.
  5. Test monthly. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity the exact questions your customers ask. Write down whether you show up. Track it like revenue, because it is.

One more thing on Google. Gemini leans hard on Google's local data, and the other assistants cross-check it. A complete, accurate Google Business Profile is the backbone of all of this. Get that right first.

How long until this works?

Schema and directory fixes get picked up in a few weeks as crawlers re-index. Reviews and page depth take longer because they build over time. Most local businesses I work with see real movement in one to three months.

Here's the bottom line. The assistant isn't punishing you. It just can't find a clean, confirmed answer, so it picks the business that gave it one. Be that business.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't my local business show up when people ask AI for a recommendation?

AI assistants skip local businesses with missing LocalBusiness schema, inconsistent name and address data across directories, few recent reviews, or thin service pages. The machine can't confirm you exist or what you do, so it names a competitor it can confirm.

Does Google Business Profile matter for AI recommendations?

Yes. Gemini pulls heavily from Google's local data, and other assistants cross-check it. A complete, accurate Google Business Profile with details that match everywhere else is one of the strongest signals you can send.

How many reviews do I need to get recommended by AI?

There's no fixed number. What matters is recent, detailed reviews that name the service and the city you serve, plus your replies. A steady flow beats a big stale pile.

How fast can I start showing up in AI answers?

Schema and directory fixes can get picked up within a few weeks. Review signals and page depth take longer. Most local businesses see movement in one to three months.

What Is the WRKNG Digital Blog?

This is where I document what I'm actually building and observing — not predictions about what AI might do someday, but what's happening right now with Shopify stores, AI shopping assistants, and the shift in how people find products online.

I run AI visibility audits on Shopify stores. I see the data. Most stores are invisible to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews — not because their products are bad, but because the structural signals AI crawlers look for aren't there.

That gap is what this blog covers.

What Will You Find Here?

AI Commerce Readiness

How AI shopping assistants like ChatGPT Shopping, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews decide which products to recommend — and what Shopify stores need to do to show up. This includes structured data, product feed optimization, and content structure.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

AEO is the practice of structuring your content so AI systems can extract it, quote it, and cite it. Different from SEO. Different signals, different ranking factors, different content requirements. I break down what it actually looks like in practice.

Real Data from Real Audits

I've audited hundreds of Shopify stores for AI readiness. The patterns are consistent. I share anonymized findings, before-and-after examples, and what the numbers actually show — not what anyone's guessing.

Agentic Commerce

AI agents that browse, compare, and recommend products are already live in ChatGPT, Copilot, and Perplexity. I cover what's changing, what Shopify's platform is doing about it, and what merchants need to do now before the window closes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AI commerce readiness for Shopify stores?

AI commerce readiness is a measure of how well your Shopify store is structured for discovery by AI shopping assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. It includes your structured data (JSON-LD schema), product feed quality, robots.txt permissions for AI crawlers, and content extractability. Most stores score an F when audited for these factors.

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

AEO is the practice of structuring your content so AI systems can find it, understand it, and cite it when answering user questions. Unlike SEO, which targets a ranked position on a results page, AEO targets a citation inside an AI-generated answer. The signals are different: question-based headings, structured Q&A content, clear definition blocks, and authoritative external references.

How is AI product discovery different from Google Search?

Google Search returns a list of links ranked by relevance. AI shopping assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity synthesize a recommended answer — selecting specific products or brands based on structured data, citation patterns, and content credibility signals. 67.8% of pages cited by AI don't rank in Google's top 10, according to Surfer SEO's research. Optimizing for one doesn't automatically optimize for the other.

How do I know if my Shopify store is visible to AI shopping assistants?

Run a free AI Commerce Audit Here. It scores your store across the key AI discoverability factors — structured data, product feed coverage, content extractability — and identifies what to fix first.
