AI shopping engines don't crawl your store like Google does. They pull structured product data -- and if your feed is missing fields, you don't get recommended. Period.
1. Product Title
AI engines parse your title to match products to buyer intent. The format that works: [Brand] + [Product Type] + [Key Attribute] + [Use Case]. "Nike Running Shoe" fails. "Nike React Infinity Run Flyknit 4 Men's Road Running Shoe" doesn't.
ChatGPT Shopping refreshes product data approximately every 15 minutes. A well-structured title gets matched across queries in near real-time. A vague one gets skipped entirely.
2. Price + Currency
Price must be current and paired with an explicit ISO 4217 currency code -- "USD," "CAD," "GBP." Not "$." Not "dollars." The code.
AI platforms are serving buyers across multiple regions. Ambiguous currency data creates matching failures. The engine moves on to the next product that got it right.
3. Availability
AI shopping agents filter out unavailable products before they generate recommendations. Your "InStock" or "OutOfStock" status has to be accurate and real-time -- not updated on a nightly batch sync.
Quantity signals matter too. Feeds that include actual inventory counts give AI engines more confidence in the data. Low-stock signals can even influence recommendation urgency.
4. Product Description
This is where most stores fall apart. AI engines extract your description text to understand who the product is for and what problem it solves. A 20-word spec list isn't a description. It's a missed opportunity.
Write 150-300 words of conversational copy. State the use case. State who it's for. According to Shopify's product content research, descriptions that address buyer intent directly outperform spec-heavy copy in conversion and now in AI surfacing. One field. Huge difference.
5. GTIN/MPN
Global Trade Item Numbers and Manufacturer Part Numbers let AI platforms cross-reference your product against other data sources -- price comparison engines, reviews databases, retailer feeds. Without them, your product exists in isolation.
We've audited hundreds of Shopify stores. 89% had missing or incomplete GTIN/MPN fields. That's not a small oversight -- it's the reason AI engines can't match your products to authoritative data. Google Merchant Center flags GTIN absence as a feed quality failure. Fix it first.
6. Product Category
You need to align your category taxonomy to Google's product taxonomy. That's the classification system AI shopping engines use to understand what you're selling and match it to categorical queries.
"Apparel" isn't a category. "Apparel & Accessories > Clothing > Activewear > Running Clothes > Running Shirts" is a category. Depth matters. Shallow categorization loses matches.
7. Images
Minimum 800x800 pixels. White background for product shots. Lifestyle imagery for context. These aren't aesthetic preferences -- they're eligibility requirements for most AI shopping surfaces.
Google's image guidelines for Merchant Center explicitly disqualify low-resolution or watermarked images from shopping eligibility. The same standards are being adopted across AI shopping platforms. A great product with bad images doesn't get recommended.
8. AggregateRating
AI engines use ratings as a trust filter. You need a minimum of 4 reviews with proper AggregateRating schema markup before most AI platforms will surface your product in recommendations.
It's not just about having reviews -- it's about having them structured so AI can read them. A 4.8-star product with no schema markup looks the same as a product with zero reviews. The structured data is what the engine sees.
9. Shipping Info
Delivery speed is a filter, not a feature. Shopping agents are configured to match buyer delivery preferences before presenting options. If your shipping data isn't in the feed, you get filtered out before the recommendation even forms.
Declare it explicitly: carrier, estimated delivery window, whether free shipping applies. Shopify stores with 99% attribute completion -- shipping included -- see 3-4x more AI recommendation impressions than stores with incomplete feeds. That gap compounds over time.
How We Chose This List
These nine fields come directly from the eligibility requirements published by Google Merchant Center for AI Mode, combined with what we've observed across hundreds of Shopify store audits at WRKNG Digital. Google Merchant Center requires all nine for AI Mode shopping eligibility -- that's the floor, not the ceiling.
FAQ
Q: Does Shopify automatically send these fields to AI shopping engines?
No. Shopify exports a basic product feed, but it won't auto-populate GTIN/MPN, structured shipping data, or AggregateRating schema. Those require either manual setup, an app, or feed management software. The default feed gets you partial credit, not full eligibility.
Q: How often should I update my product feed?
Price and availability should update in near real-time -- or at minimum every few hours. ChatGPT Shopping refreshes data approximately every 15 minutes. Stale pricing is one of the most common reasons products get filtered out of AI recommendations.
Q: What's the fastest field to fix for an immediate impact?
GTIN/MPN. 89% of stores we've audited are missing them entirely, and adding them unlocks cross-platform product matching that wasn't possible before. It's a one-time data entry project with compounding returns.
Q: Do these fields matter for ChatGPT Shopping specifically, or just Google?
Both -- and Perplexity Shopping, Microsoft Copilot, and any AI platform pulling from structured product data feeds. The fields are consistent because they're all pulling from the same underlying data standards (Schema.org, Google taxonomy, ISO currency codes). Fix the feed once. It works across platforms.
Q: My store has thousands of products. Where do I start?
Start with your top 20% of SKUs by revenue. Get those to 100% field completion first. That's typically enough to see measurable changes in AI recommendation impressions. Then work down the catalog systematically.
