ChatGPT doesn't rank products the way Google ranks pages. It reads what it can find, matches it to the shopper's question, and recommends what fits.
Here are seven ways it decides, and what to fix so your Shopify store wins each one.
1. It reads structured product data first
ChatGPT leans on feeds and Product schema to know what you sell. Complete, filled fields put you in the running.
Win it by filling name, description, price, availability, and attributes with real values, not blanks.
2. It matches the exact constraints in the question
"Waterproof jacket for winter hiking under 200 dollars" is three constraints. If your data doesn't state all three, you can't match all three.
Win it by writing the specifics: material, use case, season, and price into your data.
3. It favors complete attribute density
The more real attributes you fill, the more shopper questions your product can answer. Density beats clever copy.
Win it with the Google Merchant product data specification as your field checklist.
4. It trusts accurate price and availability
Stale price or wrong stock teaches the model not to trust you. Accuracy is a quiet ranking factor.
Win it by syncing price and availability across page, feed, and schema so they always agree.
5. It rewards readable, low-boilerplate pages
When navigation and app scripts drown your product copy, the model has to dig. Dense, substantive copy wins.
Win it by trimming bloat and making real product text the bulk of the page.
6. It uses partner catalog connections where they exist
OpenAI has built product results and checkout with partners, and Shopify has confirmed a connection that carries merchant catalog data. That pipe only carries what's in your data.
Win it by completing your catalog data before you connect it, so the pipe carries something useful.
7. It quotes clean question-answer pairs
A FAQ block gives ChatGPT ready-made answers it can lift. Real questions, direct answers.
Win it with a FAQPage-marked section covering the questions shoppers actually ask.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to pay to appear in ChatGPT Shopping?
No. Organic recommendations aren't a paid gate. ChatGPT surfaces products it can read and match, so complete data and clean schema get you in regardless of size.
How fast will my changes show up?
It varies. Feed and schema changes need recrawling and syncing before AI reflects them, which can take days to a few weeks. Fixing the data is the prerequisite.
Is this different from Google SEO?
It overlaps but rewards machine-readable product data and intent matching over keywords and links. Good structured data helps both.
