7 Questions to Audit If AI Can Buy From Your Shopify Store

September 18, 2026

You don't need a tool to start. You need to answer seven honest questions about what an AI agent hits when it tries to buy from you. Here's the self-audit.

1. Can a machine read your price without running scripts?

Load a product page with JavaScript off and see if the price survives. If it vanishes, an agent reading fast gets nothing. Price belongs in the HTML and in valid Offer markup.

2. Can it confirm the item is in stock?

Availability has to be accurate and readable, not hidden until the cart. If an agent can't confirm you can fulfill, it won't recommend or buy. Real-time stock data is the trust signal.

3. Does your title say what the product is?

Read your title as a machine would. Does it name the product and its key trait, or is it an internal code? A descriptive title is what gets matched to the shopper's request.

4. Are shipping cost and timing visible before checkout?

Agents want total cost early. If shipping only appears at the last step, the agent can't evaluate the deal. Expose it up front so the math is clear.

5. Can it check out without a human step?

Walk your own checkout looking for pop-ups, forced sign-ups, and gates. Each one is a wall an agent can't climb. Guest checkout and a clean path keep the sale possible.

6. Do your content and schema agree?

Check that your body copy, title, and Product markup all state the same facts. Contradictions make the machine trust none of them, and it picks a store it can believe.

7. Are the crawlers that feed AI allowed in?

Review your robots rules and confirm you're not blocking the bots that gather data for AI answers. If they can't reach your pages, none of the rest matters. You've locked the door.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if an AI agent can buy from my store?

Run this seven-question self-audit: can a machine read your price without scripts, confirm stock, understand your title, see shipping early, check out without a human step, find agreeing content and schema, and reach your pages through crawler rules. A no on any question is a fix to make.

What's the fastest way to test agent-readiness?

Load a product page with JavaScript disabled and try to complete a purchase without dismissing any pop-ups. If price or stock disappears, or a modal blocks the cart, an AI agent hits the same wall. It's a rough test but it surfaces the biggest blockers fast.

Do I need special software to audit for agentic commerce?

Not to start. Much of this is a manual self-check you can do today. A dedicated audit goes deeper and shows exactly what ChatGPT, Perplexity, and agents see, but the seven questions here catch the most common and most costly problems first.

What Is the WRKNG Digital Blog?

This is where I document what I'm actually building and observing — not predictions about what AI might do someday, but what's happening right now with Shopify stores, AI shopping assistants, and the shift in how people find products online.

I run AI visibility audits on Shopify stores. I see the data. Most stores are invisible to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews — not because their products are bad, but because the structural signals AI crawlers look for aren't there.

That gap is what this blog covers.

What Will You Find Here?

AI Commerce Readiness

How AI shopping assistants like ChatGPT Shopping, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews decide which products to recommend — and what Shopify stores need to do to show up. This includes structured data, product feed optimization, and content structure.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

AEO is the practice of structuring your content so AI systems can extract it, quote it, and cite it. Different from SEO. Different signals, different ranking factors, different content requirements. I break down what it actually looks like in practice.

Real Data from Real Audits

I've audited hundreds of Shopify stores for AI readiness. The patterns are consistent. I share anonymized findings, before-and-after examples, and what the numbers actually show — not what anyone's guessing.

Agentic Commerce

AI agents that browse, compare, and recommend products are already live in ChatGPT, Copilot, and Perplexity. I cover what's changing, what Shopify's platform is doing about it, and what merchants need to do now before the window closes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AI commerce readiness for Shopify stores?

AI commerce readiness is a measure of how well your Shopify store is structured for discovery by AI shopping assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. It includes your structured data (JSON-LD schema), product feed quality, robots.txt permissions for AI crawlers, and content extractability. Most stores score an F when audited for these factors.

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

AEO is the practice of structuring your content so AI systems can find it, understand it, and cite it when answering user questions. Unlike SEO, which targets a ranked position on a results page, AEO targets a citation inside an AI-generated answer. The signals are different: question-based headings, structured Q&A content, clear definition blocks, and authoritative external references.

How is AI product discovery different from Google Search?

Google Search returns a list of links ranked by relevance. AI shopping assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity synthesize a recommended answer — selecting specific products or brands based on structured data, citation patterns, and content credibility signals. 67.8% of pages cited by AI don't rank in Google's top 10, according to Surfer SEO's research. Optimizing for one doesn't automatically optimize for the other.
