Perplexity Shopping for Shopify Stores: What's Changed in Mid-2026 and How to Adapt

June 29, 2026

Is Your Shopify Store Set Up for Perplexity Shopping in 2026?

Most Shopify merchants set up Perplexity Shopping in late 2025 and never touched it again. That was a mistake. Perplexity has changed its shopping infrastructure significantly in the first half of 2026 — and stores that haven't updated their setup are getting dropped from results.

What Changed: The Comet Commerce Integration

The biggest shift: Perplexity launched Comet Commerce in Q1 2026. This is their agentic shopping layer — it doesn't just surface product links, it actively browses, compares, and can initiate purchases on behalf of users. The requirements for appearing in Comet Commerce results are more stringent than the original Perplexity Shopping integration.

Specifically, Comet Commerce requires:

  • Real-time inventory sync — Product availability must be accurate within 15 minutes. Stale stock data gets your products filtered out of purchase-intent queries.
  • Complete pricing transparency — Offer schema with final price including shipping estimates. Agents that can't calculate total cost skip you.
  • Return policy in structured format — MerchantReturnPolicy schema is now required, not optional. Comet agents check return terms before recommending.
  • Verified merchant status — Perplexity added a merchant verification layer in March 2026. If you haven't completed verification, you're excluded from Comet results by default.

The Merchant Verification Problem

This is where most Shopify stores are stuck. Perplexity rolled out merchant verification as a trust signal for Comet Commerce — similar to Google's Merchant Center verification, but separate. The process takes 5-7 business days and requires:

  1. Domain ownership verification (DNS or meta tag)
  2. Business address confirmation
  3. Merchant Center feed URL submission
  4. At least 10 active products with valid Product schema

If you haven't done this, go to perplexity.ai/merchant and start the process now. Unverified stores can still appear in standard Perplexity search results, but Comet Commerce queries — which represent the highest-intent shoppers — exclude them entirely.

What Still Works (And What Doesn't)

Still works:

  • Product pages appearing in standard Perplexity AI answers when someone asks about product categories
  • Blog content and guides getting cited when users ask how-to questions in your space
  • PerplexityBot crawling your site if you allow it in robots.txt

No longer works as well:

  • Product feed submissions from 2025 that haven't been refreshed — Perplexity deprecated the old feed format in February 2026
  • Price-only schema without Offer context — the new parser requires full Offer objects
  • Blocking PerplexityBot in robots.txt while expecting Comet Commerce visibility (can't have both)

The 4-Step Mid-2026 Perplexity Shopping Update

Step 1: Complete merchant verification if you haven't. This unlocks Comet Commerce and takes about a week. Don't skip it — everything else is secondary.

Step 2: Audit your Product and Offer schema. Use Google's Rich Results Test as a proxy — if your schema passes there, it's likely compatible with Perplexity's parser. Specifically check that Offer includes priceCurrency, availability, and url.

Step 3: Add MerchantReturnPolicy schema. This is new for most stores. At minimum include: applicableCountry, returnFees, returnPolicyCategory (MerchantReturnFiniteReturnWindow or similar), and merchantReturnDays.

Step 4: Test with real Perplexity queries. Open Perplexity, enable shopping mode, and search for your products by category and by specific product name. Document what appears. If you don't show up for product-name searches after completing merchant verification and schema updates, file a support request with Perplexity — it's usually a feed indexing issue.

The Bigger Picture

Perplexity grew from 10 million to over 100 million monthly active users in 2025. Their shopping traffic is significant enough that Shopify built a native Perplexity integration into the platform. If you're not optimized for it, you're leaving real purchase-intent traffic on the table.

This isn't theoretical anymore. Merchants who completed the mid-2026 update are seeing 15-25% of their AI-sourced traffic coming from Perplexity — up from near zero a year ago.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to redo my entire Perplexity integration?

Not entirely. If you completed the basic setup in 2025, you mainly need to: complete merchant verification (if not done), update Offer schema to current spec, and add MerchantReturnPolicy. The foundation is still valid.

What's Comet Commerce exactly?

Comet is Perplexity's agentic shopping layer — an AI that can actively shop on behalf of users, not just answer shopping questions. It represents higher-purchase-intent traffic than standard search results.

How long does merchant verification take?

The application process takes about 30 minutes. Perplexity reviews and approves within 5-7 business days for most merchants.

Will this affect my regular Perplexity search rankings?

Merchant verification specifically affects Comet Commerce visibility. Standard Perplexity search results (when users ask questions about products) depend on content quality and schema, not merchant verification status.

Is there a cost to Perplexity merchant verification?

No. The verification is free. Perplexity has indicated they will introduce a paid tier for premium placement, but the standard verification is free and sufficient for most merchants.

The merchants getting AI-sourced sales from Perplexity right now completed merchant verification and updated their schema while competitors were still figuring out if it mattered. Don't wait for more evidence — the evidence is already in the data.

What Is the WRKNG Digital Blog?

This is where I document what I'm actually building and observing — not predictions about what AI might do someday, but what's happening right now with Shopify stores, AI shopping assistants, and the shift in how people find products online.

I run AI visibility audits on Shopify stores. I see the data. Most stores are invisible to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews — not because their products are bad, but because the structural signals AI crawlers look for aren't there.

That gap is what this blog covers.

What Will You Find Here?

AI Commerce Readiness

How AI shopping assistants like ChatGPT Shopping, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews decide which products to recommend — and what Shopify stores need to do to show up. This includes structured data, product feed optimization, and content structure.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

AEO is the practice of structuring your content so AI systems can extract it, quote it, and cite it. Different from SEO. Different signals, different ranking factors, different content requirements. I break down what it actually looks like in practice.

Real Data from Real Audits

I've audited hundreds of Shopify stores for AI readiness. The patterns are consistent. I share anonymized findings, before-and-after examples, and what the numbers actually show — not what anyone's guessing.

Agentic Commerce

AI agents that browse, compare, and recommend products are already live in ChatGPT, Copilot, and Perplexity. I cover what's changing, what Shopify's platform is doing about it, and what merchants need to do now before the window closes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AI commerce readiness for Shopify stores?

AI commerce readiness is a measure of how well your Shopify store is structured for discovery by AI shopping assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. It includes your structured data (JSON-LD schema), product feed quality, robots.txt permissions for AI crawlers, and content extractability. Most stores score an F when audited for these factors.

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

AEO is the practice of structuring your content so AI systems can find it, understand it, and cite it when answering user questions. Unlike SEO, which targets a ranked position on a results page, AEO targets a citation inside an AI-generated answer. The signals are different: question-based headings, structured Q&A content, clear definition blocks, and authoritative external references.

How is AI product discovery different from Google Search?

Google Search returns a list of links ranked by relevance. AI shopping assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity synthesize a recommended answer — selecting specific products or brands based on structured data, citation patterns, and content credibility signals. 67.8% of pages cited by AI don't rank in Google's top 10, according to Surfer SEO's research. Optimizing for one doesn't automatically optimize for the other.
