How should you split budget between AEO and SEO?
There is no single right split. The right one depends on your store's stage, traffic trend, and how competitive your category is in AI answers. Here are ten real scenarios and the split I would run for each, building on our earlier take on how to split your Shopify budget.
Find the scenario closest to yours and start there. Adjust as the data comes in.
Brand-new store, no rankings yet
Run 50/50. You have nothing to defend in SEO and everything to win in AEO, where competition is lower. Build clean data once and both channels benefit.
Established store, flat Google traffic
Shift to 40 SEO / 60 AEO. Flat traffic while AI Overviews grow is a signal your buyers are moving. Follow them.
Store with strong page-one rankings
Run 30 SEO / 70 AEO. You already own the SEO real estate that matters, so defend it cheaply and pour the marginal dollar into the channel you do not own yet.
Category where competitors dominate AI answers
Push to 25 SEO / 75 AEO temporarily. If rivals get named in ChatGPT and you do not, closing that gap is worth more than another Google post.
Store with thin or broken product data
Spend the first 70% of any AEO budget on data quality before content. AI cannot cite what it cannot parse, so fix the Product schema first.
High-ticket, considered-purchase brand
Run 40 SEO / 60 AEO with heavy FAQ and comparison content. These buyers ask AI detailed questions, and citable answers win the consideration phase.
Impulse-buy, low-ticket brand
Run 60 SEO / 40 AEO. Discovery still leans visual and search-driven, but do not zero out AEO, because product data quality helps both.
Store losing traffic quarter over quarter
Go 30 SEO / 70 AEO and treat it as triage. The decline is the same slow burn that hit Facebook organic reach, and waiting makes it worse.
Store with a content team already producing
Run 50/50 and retrain the team on direct-answer, question-first formats. Same output, redirected toward what AI can cite.
Store planning past 2026
Bias to 40 SEO / 60 AEO and hold it. AEO compounds later, and funding it early is the same timing edge the smart advertisers took a decade ago.
The rule under all ten splits
Never zero out either channel. They share the same structured-data foundation, so both get stronger when you fix your data.
Move the marginal dollar toward the channel you do not yet own. In 2026, for most stores, that is AEO.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a default AEO/SEO split for most Shopify stores?
For a typical established store with flat Google traffic, roughly 40 SEO / 60 AEO is a reasonable starting point in 2026, then adjust based on results.
Should any store spend zero on SEO?
No. Even AEO-heavy stores benefit from SEO's structured-data and content foundations. The question is the ratio, not whether to keep one.
How do I know if my split is working?
Track both Google clicks and AI mention or citation rate over time. If AI mentions climb while traffic holds, the shift is paying off.
