What should you check after a Shopify update?
Every Shopify release can quietly change your theme markup, schema output, or feed behavior. Run these nine checks after each update to make sure the change did not make your store harder for AI to read.
I run this list after every major Shopify release. It takes about an hour and catches the silent regressions.
Confirm Product schema still validates
Theme updates can drop or malform structured data. Paste a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test and confirm your Product schema still passes clean.
Check for duplicate FAQ or HowTo schema
Updates sometimes inject a second schema block. Duplicate FAQPage or HowTo entries cause search engines to drop both. Keep one canonical block per page.
Verify canonical tags survived
New template versions occasionally reset canonical logic and create duplicate-content confusion. Spot-check that product and collection canonicals still point where they should.
Re-test page speed on mobile
A slower page means less content gets crawled and cited. Run a fresh mobile speed check on your top templates after every update.
Audit alt text on new template images
Updated themes can strip or blank alt attributes. AI systems use alt text for context, so confirm content images still describe themselves.
Confirm your product feed still exports fully
Feed apps break on updates more than anything else. Re-export and confirm identifiers, availability, and descriptions are all still populated.
Check that review data still renders in schema
Review apps and theme updates fight often. Confirm aggregateRating is still present, because AI assistants quote it heavily.
Validate your sitemap and lastmod dates
A clean sitemap with accurate lastmod helps AI systems know what changed. Confirm the update did not break sitemap generation.
Re-run an AI visibility spot check
Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity a buying question in your category. If your presence dropped after the update, something in your data changed. Trace it before it costs traffic.
Make this a habit, not a fire drill
Shopify ships updates constantly. The stores that stay visible treat this list as routine maintenance, not an emergency response.
One hour after each release. That is the whole cost of staying readable to AI.
Frequently asked questions
How often does Shopify push updates that affect AI visibility?
Theme, app, and platform updates land almost continuously, with larger feature releases each season. Any of them can change your markup or feed output.
Which check matters most?
Product schema validation and feed completeness. Those two do the most to keep AI assistants able to read and recommend your products.
Can I automate this checklist?
Parts of it, yes. Schema validation, feed checks, and sitemap monitoring can be automated, but a periodic manual AI visibility spot check is still worth running.
