Perplexity doesn't guess. It answers a shopping question by pulling from sources it can read, then it cites them. If your store isn't readable, you're not a source. You're not in the answer.
I've audited more than 40 Shopify stores this year. The ones Perplexity recommends have one thing in common. Their product data is complete and their pages are easy to parse. The ones it skips are guessing.
Here's why the line falls where it does.
How does Perplexity decide which stores to recommend?
Perplexity recommends stores whose product pages give it clean facts it can quote and attribute. It reads the page, matches it to the shopper's question, and cites the source that answers best. No clean facts, no citation.
It leans on structured data, product feeds, and dense on-page copy. When those are thin, the model can't verify what you sell, so it reaches for a competitor it can.
Think of it as a research assistant with a deadline. It quotes the source that makes its job easy.
Why does it skip stores with good products?
Because a good product with bad data reads like an empty page. Perplexity can't see your warehouse or your reviews from a friend. It sees the HTML and the feed. If those don't state the price, the material, and who it's for, the product doesn't exist to the model.
Most themes ship a skeleton of Product schema with empty values. Valid markup, no facts inside. I've seen stores with beautiful photography and a schema block that lists no price. Useless to a machine.
Here's the bottom line: the model rewards readable, not pretty.
What makes a store citable to Perplexity?
Specific, verifiable detail. A real title, a full description, price and availability, brand, and attributes like material, size, and use case. Every fact you state is a question you can answer and a line the model can quote.
Google publishes a product data spec that maps closely to what AI answer engines want. Treat the Google Merchant product data specification as your floor, not your ceiling.
Then cut the boilerplate. When 90% of your page is navigation and app scripts, the model has to dig for the 200 words that matter. Make those words the bulk of the page.
Does Perplexity treat Shopify stores differently?
Not by platform. It treats readable pages differently from unreadable ones. Being on Shopify gives you clean bones, but the theme and your data decide whether the model can read you.
Two stores on the same theme can land on opposite sides of this line. One filled its feed and schema. One didn't. That's the whole difference.
How do you test whether Perplexity sees your store?
Ask it. Describe a shopper looking for exactly what you sell, with a constraint or two, and see if you come up. Then add a price range and a use case and watch where you drop out.
Run five real buyer questions. If you never appear, that's your baseline. Fix the feed and schema, wait for a recrawl, and run the same five again to measure the gap closing.
This is the exact read we give stores in a WRKNG audit. What AI sees, what it says, and where your data lets you down.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Perplexity charge stores to be recommended?
No. Perplexity recommends sources it can read and verify, not advertisers. Complete product data and clean schema get you cited regardless of budget or store size.
Why does Perplexity cite my competitor instead of me?
Because it could read and verify their product facts and not yours. If a competitor states price, material, and use case in feed and schema and you don't, the model quotes the source it can attribute.
How long before feed changes affect Perplexity results?
It varies. Perplexity pulls from live sources and indexes, so changes need to be recrawled before they show. Fixing the data is the prerequisite, not an instant switch.
Is optimizing for Perplexity different from SEO?
It overlaps. Both reward clean, substantive pages. But Perplexity specifically rewards citable, verifiable facts it can quote, which puts structured product data ahead of keyword tactics.
