Why do AI shopping assistants ignore half your Shopify feed?
AI assistants ignore feed data that is empty, inconsistent, or stuck in fields they don't trust. Your feed might have fifty attributes. If half are blank or sloppy, the model treats the whole thing as low quality and leans on the few fields it can verify. The rest is dead weight.
Most store owners think a bigger feed is a better feed. It isn't. A feed full of holes reads worse than a short, clean one.
Blank fields train the model to distrust you
When GTIN, brand, material, or condition come through empty, the model can't match your product to a shopper's specific request. Google's product data specification spells out which attributes carry weight. The same fields that help Merchant Center help AI surfaces decide whether to name you.
Empty is worse than short. A blank required field is a signal that nobody is maintaining this catalog.
Inconsistent values get thrown out
If one product says "Blue" and the next says "navy blue (001)" and a third says "BLU," the model can't group or filter them. It discards what it can't reconcile. Clean, consistent values across your catalog are what let an assistant answer "show me blue running shoes under a hundred dollars" with your products in the set.
Consistency beats volume. A machine would rather have five reliable fields than fifty noisy ones.
The data that never updates
Price and availability that lag reality are a fast way to get dropped. If your feed says in stock and the product is gone, an assistant that recommends it looks wrong. It learns to stop trusting your availability signal. Schema.org's Offer type exists to carry live price and stock state for exactly this reason.
Fix the half that's hurting you
Pull your feed and count the blank required fields. Standardize your values so the same color means the same thing everywhere. Then get price and stock updating on a tight cadence. A smaller, cleaner feed will outperform a bloated one every time an assistant decides who to recommend.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a bigger product feed better for AI?
No. A feed full of blank or inconsistent fields reads as low quality. A shorter, clean feed outperforms a bloated one.
Why do blank feed fields hurt so much?
An empty required field signals nobody maintains the catalog, so the model distrusts the whole feed and leans only on fields it can verify.
What happens if my price or stock is stale?
Recommending a sold-out product makes the assistant look wrong, so it stops trusting your availability signal and drops you.
