AI assistants don't read your product page top to bottom. They go straight for a handful of fields, decide fast, and move on. The rest barely registers.
If you know which fields they reach for first, you know exactly where to spend your effort. Most stores polish the parts an assistant ignores.
Here are the fields an assistant reads first on a Shopify product, in order.
Title: the first thing it reads
The product title is the assistant's fastest signal of what the thing actually is. A clear, specific title tells it whether you're even a candidate for the shopper's request.
Vague or clever titles cost you here. 'The Everyday Essential' means nothing to a machine matching a query. Say what the product is.
Name it plainly.
Price and availability: the qualifier
Right after identity, the assistant checks whether it can quote a price and whether the item's in stock. These are the fields that decide if you're a live option or a dead end.
Keep them accurate and readable in your Product schema. A missing or stale value here drops you before the assistant even reads your description.
No price, no place in the answer.
Core attributes: the match check
Size, material, compatibility, and use case are how the assistant confirms your product fits the specific request. This is where most stores go thin, and it costs them recommendations.
Fill these against the Google Merchant product data specification. The more of these an assistant can verify, the more queries you're eligible for.
Attributes are what let it say yes.
Description: the tiebreaker
The assistant mines your description for extra facts, but only if it states them. A description full of real specifics gives it more to match on and quote.
Marketing language gives it nothing. Swap 'premium craftsmanship' for the actual material, dimensions, and who the product is for.
Write it so a machine could quote it.
What to do with this order
Fix in the order the assistant reads: clear titles, accurate price and stock, complete attributes, then fact-rich descriptions. Skip the parts it ignores until these are done.
Then test. Ask assistants to shop your category and see whether the right products surface with the right details. That shows what's still missing.
A WRKNG audit maps which of these fields your store is leaving blank.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which product field do AI assistants read first?
The title. It's the fastest signal of what the product is and whether you're even a candidate for the shopper's request, so a clear, specific title matters more than clever branding here.
Do assistants read the whole product page?
No. They pull a few key fields first, title, price, availability, and core attributes, then decide. Descriptions act as a tiebreaker, and most page decoration is invisible to them.
Why do product attributes decide recommendations?
Because attributes like size, material, and compatibility are how an assistant confirms your product matches a specific request. Thin attributes limit you to the few queries your data happens to cover.
How do I know which fields I'm missing?
Audit your products against a standard like the Google Merchant specification and check your schema against your pages, then ask assistants to shop your category and see which details come back wrong or missing.
