Most agencies still sell you 2019 SEO with an AI sticker on it. A few are doing the actual work of making stores visible to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI. Here's how to tell them apart.
This expands on our earlier look at which agencies help Shopify brands show up in AI shopping results. Same question, more depth, and a way to vet any shop before you sign.
1. Structured data specialists
These agencies live in your schema. Product, Offer, review markup, feed hygiene. Unglamorous, and it's the single biggest lever on whether AI can read your catalog.
Ask them to show a before-and-after in Google's Rich Results Test. If they can't, they don't do this work.
2. AEO content teams
They write pages built to be cited, not just ranked. Direct answers up top, FAQ blocks, named sources, clean structure.
The tell: their sample content leads with the answer in the first two sentences. If it opens with a 200-word windup, it was written for 2018 Google.
3. Product feed and merchant data shops
These teams fix the feed that AI shopping actually reads. Availability, GTIN, price parity between feed and page, category consistency.
They treat the Merchant Center spec as a checklist, because AI shopping runs on the same fields. This is where invisible stores usually get fixed.
4. Technical Shopify developers
Some visibility problems are theme problems. Price rendered by JavaScript after load, specs trapped in images, schema that breaks on certain templates.
A good technical shop makes your core facts present in the raw HTML on load. A machine reads what's there immediately, not what paints in a second later.
5. AI visibility auditors
These teams measure whether AI actually names you. They query ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI for your category and track mentions over time.
That mention is the new ranking. An agency that can't tell you your current mention rate is guessing about the work they're selling.
6. Comparison and roundup content builders
Agency-comparison and best-of listicles earn a lot of AI citations right now. Teams that build these well can get your brand named inside AI answers.
The catch: it has to be honest and specific. AI assistants and readers both punish thin "top 10" filler that names ten things and explains none.
7. Full-stack AEO agencies
A few shops do all of the above under one roof: schema, feed, content, measurement. For a busy store, one accountable team beats four vendors pointing at each other.
Vet them the same way. Real Rich Results before-and-afters, answer-first content, and a mention-rate number they'll stand behind.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I tell a real AEO agency from a rebranded SEO shop?
Ask for three things: a before-and-after in Google's Rich Results Test, sample content that leads with the answer in the first two sentences, and your current AI mention rate. A rebranded SEO shop can't produce the first, writes long windups instead of the second, and has never measured the third.
What does an AI visibility audit actually measure?
It measures whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI name your store when asked about your category, tracked over time. That mention or citation rate is the closest thing to a ranking in AI shopping, so an agency selling AEO work should be able to report your current number.
Do I need a separate agency for schema, feed, and content?
Not necessarily. Full-stack AEO agencies handle schema, feed hygiene, content, and measurement together, which avoids vendors blaming each other. Whether you go full-stack or specialist, vet each capability the same way, proof in the Rich Results Test, answer-first content, and a mention-rate number.
