When Should a DTC Brand Prioritize AEO Over SEO?
Prioritize AEO over SEO when your buyers ask AI assistants for a recommendation before they ever type a query into Google. If a real chunk of your category research now happens inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Mode, your next hour of work belongs on being the cited answer, not the tenth blue link.
That's the short version. Here's the part most people get wrong.
This is a timing question, not a religion. SEO isn't dead. AEO isn't magic. The real question is where your next hour goes this quarter. I'll give you a checklist to decide.
What's the Actual Difference Between AEO and SEO for a DTC Brand?
SEO gets you ranked on a page of links. AEO gets you named inside an answer. One earns a click. The other earns a recommendation.
For a DTC store, that gap matters more every month. A shopper asks ChatGPT "best magnesium supplement for sleep under $40" and gets three products with reasons. That shopper never sees a results page. Your rankings didn't get a vote.
Google's own AI Overviews now sit on top of a huge share of commercial searches, pushing the classic ten links further down. Pew Research found that users are far less likely to click a link when an AI summary shows up. The answer is the destination now. Not the link under it.
What Signals Say You Should Prioritize AEO Now?
Here's the framework. Go down this list and count how many are true for your store.
Prioritize AEO over SEO if three or more of these fit you:
- Your buyers ask for recommendations before they buy. Supplements, skincare, gear, pet food, anything where people want "the best one for X." That's a prompt, not a keyword.
- Your organic clicks are flat or dropping while your impressions hold steady. That's AI Overviews eating your click. Check Search Console. The gap tells the story.
- You sell a considered product over $30 where shoppers compare a few options. AI assistants love to build short lists in that range.
- You're already on Shopify and enrolled, or one click from enrolled, in agentic commerce channels like ChatGPT shopping.
- You rank on page two for your money terms and honestly aren't going to crack page one this year. AEO is an open lane. SEO for those terms is a knife fight.
- Your category has thin, generic content in AI answers right now. Ask ChatGPT your top three buyer questions. If the answers are vague, that seat is open.
Three or more? Move your effort to AEO this quarter. Two or fewer? Keep compounding your SEO and treat AEO as a side project.
I ran this exact count on a client's supplement store last month. Five of six were true. The fix was rewriting product and category pages to answer the questions buyers were already typing into ChatGPT.
When Should You Keep Prioritizing SEO Instead?
Some brands should leave SEO in the front seat. Be honest about which one you are.
Keep SEO first if you sell a low-consideration impulse product under $15, where people search a brand name and buy. Keep SEO first if you already own page one for your core terms and that traffic converts. Don't torch a channel that's paying your bills.
Keep SEO first if your category is local or highly visual, think furniture people want to see, or services tied to a zip code. Those buyers still browse.
And a hard truth: if your product pages are a mess, neither channel saves you. AI assistants pull from the same structured data Google uses. Google's product structured data rules are the floor for both. Fix the feed first. Then pick a channel.
How Do You Actually Shift Effort Toward AEO?
You don't rip out SEO. You reweight where the hours go. Here's the order I use with clients.
Step one: measure what you're losing. Open Search Console. Find pages where impressions are steady but clicks fell over the last six months. That's your AI-answer leak. Rank those pages by revenue.
Step two: find the prompts. Write down the ten questions a buyer asks before choosing your product. Not keywords. Full questions. "Is creatine safe for women over 40" beats "creatine women."
Step three: answer them cleanly on the page. Put the direct answer in the first two sentences under a question heading. Name specifics. Prices, ingredients, sizes, use cases. AI assistants quote the clearest, most concrete source. Vague copy gets skipped.
Step four: get your structured data and feed tight so agentic channels can read you. Shopify has been pushing hard here. Shopify's own product news shows AI shopping surfaces pulling directly from merchant catalogs. Thin data means thin visibility.
Step five: check if you got cited. Ask the assistants your buyer questions weekly and watch whether you show up. That's your new rank tracker.
Notice what didn't change. You're still writing content and watching data. The target moved from a link to an answer.
How Fast Is This Window Closing?
Fast enough that waiting costs you. Early movers in a category get cited, and citations compound because AI assistants lean on sources they've surfaced before. Late movers show up after the answer already has three products in it. Yours isn't one of them.
I watched this pattern with Facebook ads in 2014. The stores that moved early built a two-year lead that turned into a 10x revenue gap. Same shape here. The window is open now.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does prioritizing AEO mean I should stop doing SEO?
No. Prioritizing AEO means shifting where your next hours of effort go, not deleting your SEO work. Most of the underlying work overlaps: clean content, strong structured data, and pages that answer real buyer questions help you rank in Google and get cited by AI assistants. Keep any SEO traffic that converts. Reweight new effort toward being the cited answer in AI channels when your buyers research there.
How do I know if my DTC buyers use AI assistants to shop?
Look at two things. First, check Google Search Console for pages where impressions stay steady but clicks have dropped over the past six months. That gap usually means AI Overviews are answering the query without a click. Second, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode your top buyer questions and see whether products like yours get recommended. If they do, your buyers are almost certainly seeing those answers too.
What kind of DTC products benefit most from AEO?
Considered purchases where shoppers compare a few options benefit most. Supplements, skincare, pet food, gear, and home goods above roughly $30 all fit, because buyers ask AI assistants for a recommendation before buying. Low-consideration impulse products under $15, or purchases driven by a specific brand name search, usually see less lift from AEO and should keep SEO in the lead.
How do I track whether AEO is working?
Run your top buyer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode on a weekly schedule and record whether your brand or products get named. Treat citation frequency as your new rank tracker. Pair that with Shopify's agentic commerce reporting and Search Console click trends. If your citation rate climbs while your product data stays current, AEO is doing its job.
