What Is Answer Engine Optimization?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so AI assistants like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini name your business as the answer. Instead of ranking a page to earn a click, you earn a citation inside the answer itself.
That's the whole game now. The customer asks the machine. The machine answers. Your job is to be the source it quotes.
I ran a $10M clothing brand for 15 years and spent over $5M of my own money on ads. I've watched how people find businesses change twice. This is the second time. And it's bigger.
How Is AEO Different From SEO?
SEO gets you a spot on a page of blue links. AEO gets you named inside the answer a machine reads back to the customer. One competes for a click. The other competes to be the source.
Search used to send people to your site. Now a lot of them never arrive. Google's AI Overviews answer the question on the results page, and the person moves on.
The numbers back this up. Pew Research Center found that users click a link on just 8% of search results that show an AI summary, compared to 15% when no summary appears. That's roughly half the clicks, gone.
So the question changes. You stop asking how to rank. You start asking how to get cited.
Why Does AEO Matter in 2026?
Because the traffic is moving to the machines. OpenAI reports ChatGPT serves more than 800 million weekly active users, and a growing share of them ask it buying and research questions they used to type into Google.
Google isn't sitting still either. Google rolled AI Mode and AI Overviews out to its core search product, which means the default search experience for billions of people now answers first and links second.
The analysts see where this goes. Gartner predicts traditional search engine volume will drop 25% by 2026 as people shift to AI chatbots and virtual agents. When a quarter of search traffic reroutes through AI, being the cited answer stops being optional.
Here's the bottom line: if an AI assistant answers your customer's question without naming you, your competitor's name is in that answer. Not yours.
How Do AI Assistants Decide Who to Cite?
AI assistants pull from content that's clear, specific, and easy for a machine to read and trust. They favor pages that answer a question directly, come from a source with real authority, and carry structured data that tells the machine what the page is about.
Think about what these models need. They need a clean answer they can lift. They need to know who wrote it and whether that person knows the subject. And they need signals from other trusted sites that you're legit.
This maps to Google's E-E-A-T framework: experience, expertise, authority, and trust. The same signals that make Google trust a page make an AI assistant willing to quote it.
What Does Any Business Do to Earn AI Citations?
The core moves are the same whether you sell shoes, legal advice, or software. Five things matter most.
First, answer the real question in the first two sentences. Not a warm-up paragraph. The answer. A customer asks "what's the best CRM for a small plumbing company," and your page opens by answering exactly that in 40 to 60 words.
Second, structure your pages with schema. Add Organization, FAQ, and Article markup so machines can read your content and attribute it to your business. No schema means the machine guesses, and it usually guesses someone else.
Third, name a real author with real credentials. AI models weigh who said it. A page by a named expert beats an anonymous page every time.
Fourth, cite reputable sources and get cited by them. When you reference named research and get mentioned on sites AI already trusts, you borrow that trust.
Fifth, cover the full question. One shallow page won't do it. Build out the questions around your core topic so the machine sees you as the deep source, not a thin one.
How Do You Start Doing AEO?
Start by writing down every question a customer asks AI before they buy from you. I mean the actual words they'd type. Then build a page that answers each one, directly, at the top.
Add your schema. Name your authors. Cite your sources. Then do the part most people skip: test it. Open ChatGPT and Perplexity, ask your own target questions, and see if your business shows up.
We ran this on a service business last quarter. First scan, they weren't named in a single answer. Blank. Eight weeks later they were getting cited for four of their ten core questions. Same business. Different structure.
Track that citation rate monthly. Fix the gaps. That's the loop.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It's the practice of structuring content so AI assistants like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity cite your business as the answer to a customer's question.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
Not replacing. Extending. Good SEO still helps, because many AEO signals overlap with search signals. But AEO adds a new goal on top: getting named inside AI-generated answers, not just ranking in a list of links.
Does AEO work for small businesses?
Yes. AEO often favors small businesses, because a sharp, direct, well-structured answer can beat a big brand's bloated page. Size matters less than clarity and authority on the specific question.
How long does AEO take to work?
Most businesses start seeing citations within one to three months of fixing their content structure and authority signals. The pages that answer questions cleanly and carry proper schema tend to get picked up first.
Which AI assistants should I focus on?
Start with the three that drive the most answers: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity. Gemini matters too. The good news is the same structure that earns a citation on one usually earns it across all of them.
Ready to Become the Answer?
The businesses that get cited in 2026 are the ones building for it right now. There's still room, because most people haven't moved yet.
