What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your brand named and cited inside the answers that AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini generate. It's the difference between showing up in the answer and getting skipped entirely. More people ask AI a question now instead of scrolling a page of links.
Traditional SEO fights for a blue link on a results page. AEO fights to be the source the AI quotes when it writes the answer. Two different games. Here are the 7 things that actually decide whether you get picked.
1. Third-party citation presence
AI engines trust what other credible sites say about you more than what you say about yourself. When Perplexity or ChatGPT builds an answer, it leans on third-party pages, directories, and articles that mention your brand. If nobody else is talking about you, the model has nothing to cite. This is the single biggest gap for most brands.
2. Structured data
Structured data is schema markup that tells a machine exactly what your page is about: a product, a FAQ, a review, a business. Google's own documentation confirms structured data helps its systems understand and surface content. Clean schema makes your page readable to the engine instead of leaving it to guess.
3. Entity consistency
An AI engine has to be sure the "you" on one page is the same "you" on another. Your name, category, location, and description need to match everywhere they appear. When your details drift across your site, your listings, and your profiles, the model gets confused and trusts you less.
4. Direct-answer and FAQ content
Engines pull the sentence that answers the question fastest. Content built as clear questions with tight, standalone answers gets lifted straight into AI responses. Lead with the answer, then explain. A good FAQ block does this on purpose, and it reads as a question the engine already knows people ask. That's the whole move.
5. Reviews and E-E-A-T signals
Google scores content on Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness, laid out in its Search Quality Rater Guidelines. Reviews, real author names, and proof of real-world experience all feed those signals. AI engines favor sources that look trustworthy to a human, because they're trained on what humans trust. A page of real reviews beats a page of marketing claims every time.
6. Content freshness
Answer engines prefer recent sources, especially for anything that changes over time. A page updated this quarter beats one that's three years stale. OpenAI has said ChatGPT search pulls from current web content, so dated pages lose ground fast.
7. Being in the sources AI actually retrieves
This is the one most brands miss. AI engines don't read the whole internet live. They retrieve from a smaller pool: high-authority sites, Wikipedia, Reddit, trusted publications, and a handful of pages that rank for the query. If you're not in that pool, none of the other six things matter. Getting into it is the real work.
Get all seven working together and you stop hoping the AI mentions you and start expecting it.
How We Chose This List
We pulled these seven from running live AEO work across real brands and watching what changed their citation rate inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Each factor earned its spot by moving actual results, not theory.
FAQ
What is answer engine optimization and how does it work?
AEO is the practice of getting your brand cited inside AI-generated answers. It works by making your content easy for an engine to find, trust, and quote, through citations, schema, consistent details, and direct answers.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO aims for a ranked link on a results page. AEO aims to be the source the AI names and quotes inside the answer itself. They overlap, but the target is different.
Which AI engines does AEO target?
The main ones are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini. Good AEO is platform-agnostic, so the same work tends to help across all of them.
How long does AEO take to work?
It depends on how much third-party presence and authority you already have. Brands with existing citations see movement in weeks. Brands starting cold take longer because the engines need outside signals to trust first.
Can I do AEO myself?
Yes, you can start with clean schema, direct-answer content, and consistent business details. The harder part, earning third-party citations and getting into the retrieval pool, is where most brands bring in help.
