What Is the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) and What Should Shopify Merchants Do About It?

What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)?

The Agentic Commerce Protocol is an open standard from OpenAI and Stripe that lets an AI agent complete a purchase on a shopper's behalf. It gives agents like ChatGPT a shared way to read a store's products, add an item to a cart, and pay, all without the shopper ever landing on your website. Think of it as a common language between AI assistants and the stores they buy from.

Here's the short version. For years the AI could tell someone about your product. It couldn't buy it for them. ACP closes that gap.

OpenAI and Stripe published the spec as an open standard, which means it isn't locked to one company. You can read the details in the OpenAI agentic commerce documentation and in Stripe's announcement of the partnership. The point of making it open is simple. If every agent and every store speaks the same protocol, the buying happens fast and the shopper never gets bounced around.

Why does ACP matter for Shopify merchants?

ACP matters because it moves the sale off your website and into the agent. When a shopper asks ChatGPT for the best waterproof hiking boot under $150, the agent can now find it, compare it, and buy it inside the chat. Your product data decides whether you're the answer or the store nobody sees.

I've watched this shift happen fast in AI search over the last two years. First the models could only describe products. Then they started linking out. Now they can close the sale. Each step pulled more buying behavior away from the homepage.

For a Shopify store, that changes what a "storefront" even means. Your theme, your hero image, your carefully placed buy button. An agent ignores all of it. It reads your title, your price, your availability, your reviews, and your description. That's your storefront now, at least for this slice of buyers.

And this slice is growing. People already ask AI assistants what to buy. The only thing missing was a clean way to finish the transaction. ACP is that clean way.

How does ACP connect to Shop Pay and instant checkout?

ACP handles the conversation between the agent and the store. Shop Pay and instant checkout handle the money. When an agent decides to buy your product through ACP, the actual payment runs through a trusted checkout, and for Shopify merchants that's Shop Pay. The shopper confirms, Shop Pay processes it, and the order lands in your admin like any other sale.

This is the part that makes it real for you. OpenAI and Shopify already connected Shopify catalogs to Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT, which you can see in OpenAI's Buy it in ChatGPT announcement. A shopper finds your product in a chat, taps buy, and pays with Shop Pay without leaving the conversation.

So the plumbing is mostly built. Shopify carries the protocol work. Shop Pay carries the payment. Your job sits in the middle: give the agent a catalog worth recommending and a checkout that's turned on. Shopify's own Shop Pay setup guide walks through enabling it if you haven't already.

Miss that middle piece and you're invisible. The agent can't recommend a product it can't read, and it can't complete a sale through a checkout you never switched on.

What should Shopify merchants do about ACP right now?

You don't need to touch protocol code. You need to make your store readable and buyable by an agent. Here are the five steps that matter, in order.

1. Clean up your product data

This is step one and it's not close. Fill in every field on every product. Title, price, availability, variants, images, and a real description. Agents read data the way a machine reads a spreadsheet. Half-empty fields get skipped. I've done audits where a store had 800 products and maybe 200 had complete data. Those other 600 might as well not exist to an agent.

2. Turn on instant checkout and connect your catalog

Enable Shop Pay. Connect your catalog to ChatGPT through Shopify's integration. This is the switch that turns you from "a store the agent mentions" into "a store the agent buys from." Being an option and being the default are two very different places to sit.

3. Add Product structured data

Ship valid Schema.org Product markup with price, offers, and availability. Structured data tells an agent "this is a product, here's what it costs, here's whether it's in stock." Without it the agent has to guess, and guessing means it picks someone else.

4. Keep inventory and pricing accurate in real time

One stale price and the agent stops trusting your catalog. Sync your feed to real stock levels. Mark sold-out items as out of stock. Accuracy is what keeps you in the results after you've earned your way in.

5. Make your store crawlable to AI agents

Open your robots.txt to AI user agents. Publish an llms.txt file at your root. Load a product page with JavaScript off and check that the price and description still show. If the agent can't reach the page, the first four steps don't matter.

None of this is exotic. It's the same clean-data discipline that wins in AI search, pointed at a new outcome: the sale itself.

Is ACP just hype or does it change how people buy?

It changes how people buy, but slowly, then all at once. Right now most shoppers still buy the old way. The behavior that shifts first is discovery, then it's the actual transaction. We're at the front of that curve, which is exactly why it's worth getting your data right before the crowd shows up.

I'm not going to tell you every sale moves into a chat window next quarter. That's not true. What's true is that the path from "AI recommends" to "AI buys" is now open, and the stores that prepared for it will own those buyers. The ones that waited will scramble.

Data does not lie. The buying is moving toward the agent. Get ready for it.

FAQ

Q: Is the Agentic Commerce Protocol the same as Shop Pay?

No. ACP is the open standard that lets an AI agent talk to a store and complete a purchase. Shop Pay is Shopify's checkout that sits behind that flow to process the payment. They work together, but they're not the same thing.

Q: Do I have to code anything to support ACP?

Most Shopify merchants won't touch protocol-level code. Shopify handles the plumbing. Your job is clean product data, accurate inventory, valid schema, and turning on instant checkout.

Q: Will agents replace my website?

Not entirely. But a growing share of buyers will discover and buy through an agent rather than your homepage. Your product data becomes your storefront in those moments.

Q: How soon does this matter?

Now. Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT is already live for Shopify catalogs, and ACP is the standard other agents are building on. The stores that fix their data early get surfaced first.

Q: What's the single most important thing to do first?

Clean your product data. Every field filled, every price accurate, every item in stock or marked out of stock. Nothing else works if an agent can't read your catalog.
