AEO is answer engine optimization. It's the work of making an AI assistant recommend your products when a shopper asks it what to buy.
SEO gets you a blue link on a results page. AEO gets you named inside the answer itself. Those are two different jobs, and most Shopify stores are only doing the first one.
Here's the plain version of the difference and why it matters now.
What is AEO in one sentence?
AEO is optimizing your store so AI answer engines can read, trust, and cite your products in their responses. That's it.
When a shopper asks ChatGPT or Google AI for the best option in your category, the model pulls from sources it can verify. AEO is the work of being one of those sources.
The goal isn't a ranking. It's a recommendation.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO optimizes for a search engine that returns a list of links to click. AEO optimizes for a model that returns one synthesized answer with a few citations.
SEO rewards keywords, backlinks, and rankings. AEO rewards clean, verifiable facts a model can quote and attribute. A page can rank on page one and still never get cited by an AI, because the model couldn't extract a clear answer from it.
They overlap, but they're not the same job.
Why does AEO matter for Shopify stores right now?
Because discovery is moving into the answer. More shoppers start with ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI results, and many never click through to a store the way they used to.
I've lived a version of this shift. Facebook buried organic reach and my online sales dropped from 50,000 dollars a month to 2,000 almost overnight. The stores that adapted early compounded away from everyone else. AI discovery has the same shape.
The stores getting cited today are building an advantage that's hard to catch later.
What does AEO work actually involve?
Complete product data, so a model can state your price, material, and use case. Structured data that matches the page. Content that answers the real questions shoppers ask, in plain language a model can quote.
Follow the Google Merchant product data specification as your data floor, then write pages that answer buyer questions directly instead of burying the answer under fluff.
None of it is exotic. Most stores just haven't done it yet.
Do I have to choose between SEO and AEO?
No. The clean data and clear answers that help AEO also help classic SEO. You're not trading one for the other.
The mistake is doing only SEO and assuming it covers AEO. It doesn't. Ranking and being cited are earned differently, and you want both.
A WRKNG audit shows you where your store stands on each, and what to fix first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AEO adds a new surface, AI answers, on top of classic search. The clean data and clear pages that help AEO also help SEO, so the smart move is to do both rather than trade one for the other.
Is AEO only for big Shopify brands?
No. AEO rewards data quality and clear answers, not budget. A small store with complete product data and clean schema can get cited over a larger competitor whose data is thin.
How do I measure AEO results?
Ask AI assistants real buyer questions in your category and track whether you're mentioned or cited, before and after changes. Mention rate and citation rate are the metrics that matter for AEO.
What's the first AEO step for a Shopify store?
Complete and validate your product data. Title, description, price, availability, brand, and attributes need real values in both your feed and your on-page schema before anything else moves the needle.
