Which product feed fields matter most for AI search?
The fields that matter most are title, description, product type, GTIN, attributes, availability, price, and images. AI assistants read those to decide whether your product answers a shopper's question. Get them complete and accurate, and you become eligible for recommendations. Leave them blank, and you're invisible.
Not every field carries equal weight. Let me rank the ones that actually move the needle.
Why is the title the most important field?
Because it's the first thing an AI matches against a query. A title like "Merino Wool Base Layer, Men's, Midweight" tells a model exactly what it is and who it's for. A title like "Cozy Essential Top" tells it nothing. Write titles a shopper would actually say. Brand, product, defining attribute.
Keyword stuffing backfires here. Models read it as spam and downrank you.
How much does the description field matter?
A lot. This is where you answer the follow-up questions a shopper asks. Material, fit, use case, care instructions, what problem it solves. AI pulls direct quotes from good descriptions. Thin ones give it nothing to cite. Shopify's product feed documentation shows how the description maps into structured feeds.
Do GTINs and product type still matter in 2026?
More than ever. GTINs let AI confirm your product is a real, verifiable item. Product type gives it a shelf to place you on. Together they answer "is this legit" and "where does it belong." Google Merchant Center treats both as core identity fields, and AI assistants inherit that framework.
What about attributes like color and size?
These decide whether you match filtered queries. "Waterproof jacket for women, size large" only finds you if those attributes are filled. Empty attribute fields are the single biggest source of lost visibility I see in feed audits. Fill every one that applies to the product.
Why do availability and price need to be live?
Because AI assistants won't recommend something a shopper can't buy at the price shown. A feed that says in stock when you're sold out breaks trust and gets you filtered out. Sync price and availability daily. No exceptions.
I've seen stores lose recommendations for weeks because a sold-out hero product still showed as available.
How much do images count?
AI shopping surfaces are visual. Multiple high-resolution images with descriptive alt text help the model understand and display your product. One blurry photo limits how you can appear. This field gets ignored more than it should.
What order should I fix these in?
Start with availability and price accuracy, since a lying feed undoes everything else. Then titles and descriptions. Then identity fields. Then attributes and images. Fix the trust-breakers first, then build depth.
FAQ
Q: Do I need every field filled for every product?
Fill every field that applies. A blank field for an attribute the product doesn't have is fine. A blank field for one it does have costs you visibility.
Q: Does a Shopify app handle this automatically?
Apps can map and sync fields, but they can't invent missing data. The content quality is on you.
Q: How do AI assistants get my feed?
Through your structured data, your Merchant Center feed, and direct crawling. Keeping all three consistent gives you the best coverage.
Q: How fast will feed fixes show up in AI results?
Usually two to six weeks, depending on crawler refresh cycles.
