The Shopify AEO Audit Checklist Every Store Should Run in 2026

Most Shopify stores have never checked whether an AI assistant can read them. They audit for SEO. They audit for conversion. They've never once asked what ChatGPT sees.

An AEO audit answers that. It checks whether your store's data, structure, and content are readable and citable by AI systems.

Here's the checklist I run.

What is an AEO audit?

An AEO audit checks whether AI assistants can find, read, and cite your store. It looks at structured data, feed completeness, content formatting, and whether your brand actually appears in AI answers for your key questions.

It's different from an SEO audit. SEO asks if Google can crawl and rank you. AEO asks if an AI can lift a fact from your page and put it in an answer.

Which product data should you check first?

Start with feed completeness. Every product needs a specific title, a real description, price, availability, brand, and attributes like material, gender, age group, color, and size. Blank fields are lost answers.

Use the Google Merchant product data specification as your field-by-field checklist. If a field is in that spec and empty on your products, flag it.

How do you audit structured data?

Check that every product page outputs complete Product JSON-LD with name, description, brand, offers, price, and availability filled in. Then confirm you're not shipping duplicate or broken schema blocks.

Run key pages through Schema.org's validator and Google's Rich Results Test. Duplicate FAQPage or HowTo blocks make Google drop both, so keep one canonical block per type.

How do you check content extractability?

Look at the ratio of real content to boilerplate. If navigation, popups, and app scripts dominate the HTML, AI has to dig for the substance. Dense, substantive copy in the first screen wins.

Then check formatting. Question-style headings, short quotable answers, and FAQ blocks with FAQPage schema all make your content easier to lift into an answer.

How do you test actual AI visibility?

Ask the assistants. Run five to ten real buyer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews and record whether your brand or products appear. That's your baseline mention rate.

Re-run the same questions monthly. If your mention rate climbs after you fix data and formatting, the audit is doing its job.

Here's the bottom line: you can't fix what you've never measured. Run the audit, fix the gaps, measure again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I run an AEO audit?

Run a full audit quarterly and a lightweight AI-visibility test monthly. Structured data and feeds change as you add products, and AI systems recrawl on their own schedule, so periodic checks catch drift.

What's the single biggest AEO gap on most Shopify stores?

Incomplete product data. Missing attributes like material, age group, and specific descriptions are the most common reason AI can't match products to shopper questions.

Do I need a tool to run an AEO audit?

You can start manually by validating schema, checking feed fields, and testing questions in AI assistants. Tools speed up scale, but the core checks can be done by hand on your top pages.

Will fixing these issues help my SEO too?

Yes. Complete structured data, clean HTML, and FAQ schema improve both AI citation odds and traditional search visibility.
