The 2026 Shopify AEO Audit Checklist: What to Fix Before Q4

Q4 is when AI shopping traffic spikes and when your data gaps cost the most. This checklist is what I run before the fourth quarter to make sure a Shopify store is readable, citable, and buyable by AI assistants.

Work it top to bottom. Each item is a real failure I keep finding in audits.

Is your Product schema complete and valid?

Check that every product page outputs Product JSON-LD with a real name, brand, description, price, and availability filled in. Valid-but-empty schema is the most common miss, and it gives AI nothing to cite.

Use the Product schema spec as your reference and confirm the price and availability fields carry actual values. Also remove duplicate FAQPage or HowTo blocks. Duplicates can cause both to be dropped from rich results.

Are your product feed fields fully populated?

Confirm title, description, product type, brand, material, color, size, gender, age group, price, and availability are filled on every variant. Blank attributes are lost AI matches, plain and simple.

Google's product data specification is the checklist to grade against. Start with your top revenue products and work down. That order returns the most visibility per hour of work.

Do your pages have real FAQ content with question headings?

Add FAQ sections with question-style headings and a direct answer in the first one to two sentences. This is the format AI answer engines extract and cite, and it's the single biggest content gap I see.

Across recent audits, FAQ content and content extractability were the weakest areas on nearly every page. Add FAQPage schema to match. Then confirm the answer is quotable on its own, without the shopper needing the rest of the page.

Are your freshness and consistency signals in place?

Check that structured data includes a dateModified and that your sitemap carries lastmod entries. Stale-looking pages lose trust with both search and AI systems that weigh freshness.

Standardize your brand name across HTML metadata and JSON-LD too. Inconsistent entity naming confuses AI about who you even are. Add contact fields in your organization schema so your identity is unambiguous.

Have you tested what AI actually says about your store?

Run your real buyer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews and log whether you appear. This is the test that turns a checklist into a scorecard. If you're invisible, the earlier items tell you why.

I pair this test with a citation check on our own listicle and comparison pages, because those are the ones earning AI citations right now. For a full read, WRKNG runs this end to end. But you can start with five questions and a notepad today.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Shopify AEO audit?

A Shopify AEO audit checks whether AI answer engines can read, trust, and recommend your store. It reviews product schema, feed completeness, FAQ content, freshness signals, and what AI assistants actually say about you.

How often should I run an AEO audit?

Run a full audit quarterly and a lighter check monthly. AI platforms and your own data both change, so before a big season like Q4, a fresh audit is worth the time.

What's the fastest AEO fix with the biggest impact?

Adding real FAQ content with question headings and direct answers, backed by FAQPage schema. It's the most common gap and one of the strongest citation signals for AI answer engines.

Do I need paid tools to audit AEO?

No. You can start by testing buyer questions in ChatGPT and Perplexity and checking your schema and feed fields by hand. Paid tools help you track citations and trends over time, but the first pass is free.
