The 10-Point Shopify AI Visibility Audit Checklist

A Shopify AI visibility audit checks ten things: whether AI crawlers can reach your store, whether your structured data is valid, whether your product data is accurate, whether trusted sources mention you, and whether AI tools actually name you in a live answer. Run all ten and you'll know exactly why you're invisible to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Here's the full checklist.

I spent 15 years building a clothing brand to $10M a year. I never had to think about whether a robot could read my product page. Now it's the whole game. Most stores fail this audit on the first three points and never find out.

1. Confirm AI crawlers aren't blocked in robots.txt

Check whether your robots.txt allows GPTBot, Google-Extended, and PerplexityBot to crawl. If these are blocked, AI tools can't index your store at all, so nothing else on this list matters. Pull up yourstore.com/robots.txt and read it, or check OpenAI's GPTBot documentation for the exact user-agent strings.

2. Validate your Product structured data

Run every product template through Google's Rich Results Test and confirm your Product schema passes with no errors. This is the data AI reads to understand what you sell, what it costs, and whether it's in stock. One broken field and your listing gets skipped.

3. Check that price, stock, and specs are accurate

Make sure the price, availability, and specs in your schema match what's live on the page. AI assistants quote this data directly, and a wrong price kills trust the second a buyer catches it. See schema.org's Product spec for the fields that matter most.

4. Audit product descriptions for real buyer questions

Read your top product pages and ask if they answer the questions a buyer actually types into AI: sizing, materials, use case, what makes it different. Descriptions written for SEO keywords don't get quoted. Descriptions that answer questions do.

5. Verify your Review and rating schema

Confirm your review and aggregate rating markup is present and valid on product pages. AI tools weigh social proof heavily, and a visible star rating in your schema gives them a reason to recommend you over a competitor. Test it in the same Rich Results Test from point two.

6. Check for third-party mentions and reviews

Search for your brand on review sites, roundups, and comparison pages that AI already trusts. ChatGPT and Perplexity lean on third-party sources, not just your own site, so a store nobody else talks about stays invisible. If you find nothing, that's your biggest gap.

7. Test page speed and how bots render your pages

Run your key pages through Google PageSpeed Insights and confirm your product content loads without heavy JavaScript delays. If a bot has to wait for scripts to paint your price, it often gives up first. Fast, server-rendered content gets read; slow content gets dropped.

8. Confirm you have a category buying guide

Check whether you publish a real buying guide for your category, not just product pages. AI assistants cite guides when buyers ask open questions like "what's the best X for Y." No guide means you only show up for people who already know your name.

9. Add or check your llms.txt file

Look for an llms.txt file at the root of your domain that points AI crawlers to your most important pages. It's a plain-text map that tells models what to read first. The llms.txt proposal is still young, but it's free and takes an hour.

10. Run a live prompt test in three AI tools

Open ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity and ask each one to recommend a product in your category. If your store never comes up, you have hard proof of a visibility problem, not a guess. This is the single most honest point on the list. Run it first and last.

How we built this checklist

These ten points come from running AI visibility audits on live Shopify stores and watching which fixes actually moved stores into AI answers. Crawler access, valid schema, and third-party trust move the needle hardest. Everything else compounds on top.

FAQ

What is a Shopify AI visibility audit?

It's a check of whether AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity can crawl, read, trust, and recommend your Shopify products. It covers crawler access, structured data, data accuracy, third-party mentions, and live prompt tests.

How often should I audit my store for AI visibility?

Every quarter at minimum, and right after any theme change or re-platform. Theme edits and app changes break structured data more often than most owners realize.

Do I need a developer to run this audit?

No. Most of the ten points you can check yourself with free tools like Google's Rich Results Test and a plain prompt test in ChatGPT. You only need a developer to fix broken schema or theme-level code.

Why isn't my Shopify store showing up in ChatGPT answers?

Usually one of three reasons: AI crawlers are blocked in robots.txt, your Product schema is missing or broken, or no trusted third-party source mentions you. This checklist finds which one it is.
