To prepare your Shopify store for agentic commerce in 2026, work these seven steps in order: complete your product data, add schema, simplify checkout, sync inventory, open crawler access, earn citations, and test with real agents. Data first. Everything else builds on it.
I've watched one discovery shift catch operators flat-footed already. This checklist is the thing I wish someone had handed me in 2014. Run it top to bottom.
1. Complete your product data
Fill every attribute a buyer would ask about: material, size, use case, compatibility. An AI agent evaluates products by their data, so a blank field is a product it can't choose. Start with your best sellers.
2. Add Product and Offer schema
Product and Offer JSON-LD give agents the machine-readable price, availability, and item details they need to transact. Google's Product structured data spec is the baseline. Without it, your page is just words.
3. Simplify checkout
Agents abandon friction instantly. Remove forced account creation, surface shipping costs early, and cut steps that only exist for humans. Shopify's checkout settings handle most of this. Walk it like a machine would.
4. Sync inventory and pricing
Your feed, schema, and storefront must agree on price and stock. When they conflict, agents can't trust the transaction and bail. One stale availability flag costs real sales. Keep it synced.
5. Open AI crawler access
Check robots.txt for the crawlers that feed agentic shopping. OpenAI documents its bots, and other platforms publish theirs. Blocking them keeps buyers out. Confirm you're letting the right ones in.
6. Earn third-party citations
Agents trust corroborated sources. A mention in a category roundup or review site tells the model your store is legitimate. Two or three real citations beat a dozen self-published pages.
7. Test with AI agents
Run your own products through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI with the queries your buyers use. See if you show up. See if the data reads right. Testing is the step most operators skip, and it's the one that tells you the truth.
How We Chose These Steps
We ordered these by dependency and impact, based on preparing live Shopify stores for AI-driven buying. Data and schema come first because nothing downstream works without them.
FAQ
Q: What's the first step to prepare for agentic commerce?
Complete your product data. Agents only transact on products they can fully read, so blank attributes come first.
Q: How long does it take to get agent-ready?
Core steps take a few weeks. Data and schema first, then checkout and inventory. Citations build over months.
Q: Do I need special Shopify apps for agentic commerce?
No. You need clean data, correct schema, and low-friction checkout, most of which Shopify supports natively.
Q: Can I do this without a developer?
Some of it. Checkout and crawler checks, yes. Schema and feed work at scale usually needs help.
