Yes, you should still invest in SEO. Just not the way you did in 2020. The job changed from ranking a page to becoming the answer, and most Shopify brands are still spending on the old job.
I've had a hard time accepting this myself. I built a whole growth engine on organic traffic once. Then the platform changed the rules overnight and that engine stalled. I'm watching the same thing start again.
What changed about SEO?
Search used to send you a click. Now AI answers the question on the page, and the shopper never leaves. Your ranking still matters. A rank that never gets cited by the AI earns you nothing.
Google's own AI Overviews answer product questions directly. If your page isn't the source it pulls from, you're invisible even at position one.
So is SEO dead for Shopify?
No. The plumbing of SEO is the plumbing of AEO. Clean structure, fast pages, valid schema, a real sitemap. AI reads your store using the same signals a crawler always did.
Here's what I mean. The technical foundation you built for Google is what lets ChatGPT and Perplexity read your products too. That work isn't wasted. It's the entry ticket.
Where does the old SEO habit waste money?
Chasing keyword volume for its own sake. Thin blog posts written to rank, never to answer. Backlink schemes. Those moved the needle when a rank meant a click. A rank that AI ignores means nothing now.
Two percent. That's roughly how much of a typical product page an AI can actually extract and cite when the content is buried in boilerplate. The rest is wasted effort dressed up as SEO.
What should you fund now?
Answer-first content. Structured data on every product. FAQ blocks that match how people ask AI questions. A FAQPage schema does more for AI visibility than a month of keyword stuffing.
Fund the pages that get quoted. Definition blocks, direct answers, named data. That's what an AI lifts into its response with your name attached.
What's the 2026 split?
Keep the technical SEO base. It's non-negotiable. Then shift new effort toward AEO: making your store the thing AI recommends, on top of the thing Google ranks.
Nobody's going to save you here. The brands treating this as one budget win. The ones running two rival silos, or still pouring cash into a search box their customer is starting to skip, fall behind.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is SEO still worth it for Shopify stores in 2026?
Yes, and the goal shifted. Technical SEO, clean structure, valid schema, and fast pages remain the foundation AI uses to read your store. What stops paying off is chasing keyword volume and thin ranking content, because a high rank that AI doesn't cite sends no traffic.
What's the difference between SEO and AEO?
SEO works to rank a page in a list of results a human clicks. AEO, answer engine optimization, works to become the answer an AI gives directly, with your brand cited as the source. They share technical foundations and differ in goal: rank versus recommendation.
How should I split my budget between SEO and AEO?
Keep funding the technical SEO base since AI relies on it, then move new content budget toward AEO: answer-first pages, structured product data, and FAQ blocks matching how people ask AI. Treat them as one strategy, and not two competing silos.
