June 17 is five days away.
That's when Shopify officially drops Summer '26 Editions. Over 150 updates across the platform. And the AI commerce section of this release is unlike anything they've shipped before. We're not talking about small feature add-ons. The agentic infrastructure changes in this edition will determine which stores are visible in AI shopping channels and which ones aren't.
I've been tracking what Shopify has been pre-seeding into admin over the past 60 days. The pieces are already there. Most merchants haven't touched them. Here's what's coming, what requires setup before launch, and what to do this weekend before Tuesday arrives.
What Is Shopify Summer '26 Editions?
Shopify ships two major Editions releases per year: one in winter (around January) and one in summer (around June). Each release bundles hundreds of updates that have been rolling out in the background, then officially showcases them with demos, documentation, and developer resources.
Summer '26 Editions goes live at shopify.com/editions on June 17. The full feature list publishes that day. But many of the AI features are already in your admin right now, waiting for activation or cleanup work before they'll do anything useful.
That's the pattern with every Shopify Editions drop. The merchants who move before the announcement date have a head start. Everyone else spends the next two weeks scrambling to catch up.
What AI Commerce Features Are Confirmed for Summer '26?
The data is clear on this one.
Based on what Shopify has pre-announced and what partners have reported seeing in admin previews, here's what's confirmed for the AI commerce section of Summer '26 Editions:
Agentic Storefronts Expansion
Your products will now be purchasable directly inside ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini. Not just discoverable. Purchasable. Shopify routes the order through your admin, handles the merchant-of-record status, and sends you the attribution data.
The ChatGPT channel was auto-activated for eligible US merchants back in March 2026. Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode require a manual toggle. Most merchants I've spoken with didn't know those toggles existed. They're currently off.
Agentic Commerce Dashboard
This is new. Shopify is adding a dedicated section inside admin to monitor AI-driven product discovery performance across all agentic channels. Think of it as a separate analytics panel showing which products are appearing in AI conversations, which are getting recommended, and where the gaps are.
You can't act on data you can't see. This dashboard matters.
Native AI Merchandising Tools
Built directly into admin: AI collection sorting, predictive cross-sell blocks for cart upsell suggestions, and a merchandising insights panel. These don't require third-party apps. They'll appear in your existing product and collection views after launch.
Enhanced Shopify Sidekick
Sidekick is getting multi-step reasoning, voice chat, screen sharing support, and the ability to run natural language commands across store analytics. You'll be able to ask Sidekick to pull a report, segment customers, or adjust a collection without touching a menu. Available free to all merchants through Shopify Magic.
Upgraded Shopify Magic
Shopify Magic now generates product descriptions that adapt to brand tone, adds AI image editing for background removal and product enhancement, and can create personalized content blocks for your storefront. The product description upgrade alone is worth the cleanup work it requires.
AI-Suggested Product Attributes
Shopify will suggest missing attributes directly in the product editor. This is the biggest silent upgrade in the release for merchants who haven't done a catalog audit. It surfaces the exact gaps that make your products invisible to AI shopping agents.
Which Features Require Setup Before June 17?
Most of these won't just turn on and work. They need clean data underneath them. An AI merchandising tool with bad product data returns bad results. An Agentic Storefront channel with missing descriptions means agents can't confidently recommend your products.
I've seen this with 40+ store audits. The stores that get the most out of each Shopify Editions release are the ones that did their data cleanup before the feature dropped. The ones who wait until launch day are fixing problems while their competitors are getting traction.
Two things to flag specifically:
First, the Agentic Storefronts for Copilot and Google AI Mode won't auto-enable. You have to turn them on manually in Settings > Sales Channels > Agentic. Five minutes of work. But if it's still off on June 18, you're invisible on those channels while the summer shopping season runs.
Second, the AI-suggested product attributes feature will show you what's missing. But fixing it takes time. Start now.
What Should Merchants Do Before June 17?
Five steps. Do them this weekend.
Step 1: Check your Agentic Storefronts settings. Go to Settings > Sales Channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin. ChatGPT should already be active for US merchants. Toggle on Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode. Confirm your payment gateway supports agent-initiated checkouts.
Step 2: Audit your product data for agent-required attributes. Export your catalog. Check for the fields AI agents read first: detailed descriptions, materials, use cases, fit notes for apparel, compatibility notes for tech products. Products missing two or more of these have reduced visibility in AI shopping interfaces. Fix the top 20% of your catalog by revenue first.
Step 3: Add custom metafields for products with many variants. Without them, AI agents fragment your variants and surface incomplete information. This is especially common with apparel and accessories brands. Shopify's metafield editor is in the Products section of admin.
Step 4: Build out your Knowledge Base content. This is the content AI shopping agents use when a shopper asks a question about your store. Empty knowledge bases mean agents either make things up or bounce the shopper to a competitor. Fill in your return policy, shipping windows, and top product FAQs before launch.
Step 5: Migrate from Shopify Scripts to Shopify Functions. This one isn't AI-related, but it's the most urgent item in this Editions release. Scripts sunset on June 30, 2026. That's 18 days away. Any store still running Scripts for discounts, shipping, or checkout logic will break after that date. Check your customizations and migrate now. Don't wait.
Will the AI Features Cost Extra?
The core AI features in Summer '26 Editions are included with existing Shopify plans. Shopify Magic and Sidekick are free. Agentic Storefronts run on standard payment processing rates with no added transaction fees for AI-channel sales.
The checkout conversion lift data Shopify is reporting (8-22% for early adopters of Checkout Components) reflects performance improvements, not paid features. That's for Shopify Plus merchants who've already been in the preview.
Higher-tier features, like advanced B2B net terms and some analytics add-ons, may require plan upgrades. But the five prep steps above are available to every Shopify plan, starting today.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is Shopify Summer '26 Editions?
It's Shopify's mid-year product release. The company bundles 150+ updates that have been rolling out in the background, then officially showcases them on a single date (June 17, 2026) with demos, documentation, and developer resources. It's the biggest product announcement Shopify makes outside of their Unite conference.
Are Agentic Storefronts actually driving sales yet?
Yes, for stores that set them up correctly. The ChatGPT integration has been live for eligible US merchants since March 2026. Merchants with complete product data and active Knowledge Base content are seeing AI-referred orders show up in attribution reports. Stores with incomplete catalog data are appearing in AI conversations but not converting, because agents can't confidently complete the recommendation.
What happens if I don't migrate from Shopify Scripts before June 30?
Your custom checkout logic breaks. Any Script running discount logic, shipping calculations, or line item adjustments will stop working on June 30, 2026. Shopify has been flagging this for months. If you're not sure whether your store uses Scripts, go to Apps > Script Editor in your admin. If the app is installed and has active scripts, you need to act now.
How do I know if my products are actually visible to AI shopping agents?
Start in the Agentic Commerce Dashboard once it's live on June 17. Before then, the best proxy is a manual check: go to a product page and ask whether the description answers the questions a shopper would ask an AI (what's it made of, who is it for, what problem does it solve, what are the dimensions). Products that can't answer those questions won't get recommended. Products that can, will.
Do I need to do anything to get the new AI merchandising tools in my admin?
The native AI merchandising features (collection sorting, cross-sell blocks, insights panel) will appear in your existing admin views after launch. No app install needed. But they'll work better if your product data is clean before they turn on. Running AI collection sorting on a catalog with vague product titles and missing attributes produces mediocre results.
Five days. That's what you have.
Every Editions release, the same thing happens. Merchants who prepared get an edge they hold for months. Merchants who watch the announcement and then start reading about it lose two weeks while their competitors compound the advantage.
The agentic infrastructure is there. The channels are there. The data cleanup is the only thing between your products and AI-driven discovery at scale.
