Every Shopify release can quietly break something AI assistants rely on. Theme updates, app changes, and new defaults all move things. The nine settings below are the ones to re-check after every update.
I've watched a single theme update blank out product prices in the raw HTML. The store looked fine to shoppers and read as empty to crawlers. Ten minutes of checking would have caught it.
1. Structured data output on product pages
Confirm your Product and Offer schema still renders after the update. Theme changes are the most common way valid markup silently disappears.
Run one product URL through the Rich Results Test and check for errors. Two minutes, and it catches the biggest failure mode.
2. Price visibility in raw HTML
Make sure the price sits in the page source, not painted on by a script that loads late. Assistants read the raw HTML first, and a blank price gets you skipped.
View source on a product page and search for the number. If it's not there, fix the theme before anything else.
3. Availability and stock flags
Check that in-stock status shows in machine-readable form and matches reality. A mismatch between feed and page makes an assistant trust neither.
Google's Merchant Center spec treats availability as required for a reason. Confirm it survived the release.
4. Product feed field mapping
Updates can remap or drop feed fields like GTIN, brand, and condition. Re-export the feed and scan for new blanks.
One store I checked lost every GTIN after an app update. Their tie-breaker field went dark overnight.
5. Canonical tags and URLs
Confirm canonical tags still point to the right pages. Releases and app installs can introduce duplicate URLs that split your signals.
Duplicate content confuses both search and AI assistants about which page to trust.
6. FAQ and review schema
Check that FAQPage and AggregateRating markup still validates. Duplicate or broken blocks get dropped, taking your rich results with them.
The audit we run flags duplicate FAQPage blocks constantly. Updates are usually the cause.
7. Image alt text and rendering
Verify content images still carry descriptive alt text and load in the raw HTML. Visual AI leans on both.
Empty alt attributes belong only on purely decorative images. Everything else needs a description.
8. Sitemap and lastmod dates
Confirm your sitemap still lists product and blog URLs with fresh lastmod entries. Freshness signals help AI decide what's current.
A stale sitemap tells crawlers nothing changed, even when it did.
9. Robots and AI crawler access
Check that your robots settings and any llms.txt hints still allow the crawlers you want. A default change can quietly block access.
If assistants can't crawl you, none of the other eight settings matter. Check this one last, but always check it.
How we chose these settings
These nine come from running post-release audits on live Shopify stores. Each is a setting we've personally seen break after an update, ranked by how badly it hurts AI visibility when it does.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I check on my Shopify store after a platform release?
Re-check structured data output, price visibility in raw HTML, availability flags, feed field mapping, canonical tags, FAQ and review schema, image alt text, sitemap freshness, and crawler access. These are the settings most likely to break silently after an update and hurt AI visibility.
Why do Shopify updates hurt AI visibility?
Theme updates, app changes, and new defaults can drop schema, move price data into late-loading scripts, remap feed fields, or block crawlers. The store still looks fine to human shoppers while reading as broken or empty to the AI assistants deciding what to recommend.
How often should I run this check?
After every Shopify release and any major theme or app update. It takes about fifteen minutes and catches the failures that quietly remove your products from AI recommendations between your regular audits.
