Shopify Schema Markup for AI Search: What Changed in 2026

August 22, 2026

What changed for Shopify schema markup in AI search?

In 2026, three things changed: shipping and returns data got weighted more heavily, duplicate schema blocks became a real liability, and freshness signals now matter more. If your schema is a year old, it's probably costing you AI visibility.

We wrote about schema fundamentals before. This is the update. The basics still hold, but the bar moved, and a lot of stores are running structured data that was fine in 2025 and is leaking visibility now.

Step 1: Audit your current schema

Start by validating every template. Product pages, collection pages, blog posts. See which fields are present and which are blank. Our audits show most stores are missing the exact fields that got more important this year.

Step 2: Add shipping and returns data

This is the big change. AI and search now lean on shippingDetails and return policy fields to judge total cost and risk, especially as agentic commerce grows. Google's product docs now spell these out explicitly. Add them.

Step 3: Fix duplicate schema blocks

Duplicate FAQPage or HowTo blocks used to be harmless clutter. Now they get both copies dropped. If two apps each inject FAQ schema, you can lose your rich results entirely. Keep one canonical block per type per page.

Step 4: Add dateModified

Freshness is a trust signal. AI is more skeptical of stale data than it used to be. Add dateModified to your structured data and keep it honest. Stale timestamps are worse than none.

Step 5: Validate and monitor

Schema breaks quietly. A theme update or a new app can wipe out fields across your whole catalog in one deploy. Re-validate after every change. Treat it like you'd treat checkout: too important to leave unmonitored.

The bottom line

Here's the bottom line: the schema that worked last year isn't enough this year. Add shipping and returns, kill duplicates, and add freshness. Small changes, real visibility.

The stores that update their structured data every year stay visible. The ones that set it and forget it slowly disappear from AI answers. Don't be the second kind.
