What is a Shopify AI-readiness audit?
A Shopify AI-readiness audit is a check of whether AI shopping assistants can find, trust, and sell your products. It looks at seven things: your product feed, your structured data, your crawler access, your policies, your titles, your checkout eligibility, and your tracking. If any one is broken, the AI skips you.
That's the whole audit in one paragraph. The rest of this post is how to run each check.
Why does this matter right now?
Because shoppers already buy through AI. ChatGPT rolled out in-chat checkout with Shopify merchants in 2025. Perplexity has its Buy with Pro flow. Gemini is wiring purchases into search. The buy button moved off your homepage and into a chat window.
Here's the thing. Most Shopify stores were built for Google's blue links. That era is fading. Adobe's holiday data showed AI-driven traffic to retail sites jumping over 1,200% year over year heading into the 2024 season, per Adobe Analytics. Small base, sure. But the curve is steep and it points one way.
I've run this audit on more than 40 stores now. The same holes show up every time. Clean them before the next wave, not after.
Check 1: Is your product feed accurate?
Start here. If Google or ChatGPT is picking products for a shopper, they read your feed as fact, not your website copy. Wrong price, stale stock count, missing GTIN, and you drop out of the answer entirely.
Open Google Merchant Center and sort by disapproved and expiring items. Fix the flags. Match every required field against the Google Merchant Center product data specification. Shopify pushes your catalog through the Google & YouTube channel, but it won't fix bad data for you.
The fields that get skipped most: GTIN, brand, and shipping. Those three decide whether an agent can trust your listing enough to recommend it.
Check 2: Does your Product schema validate?
AI crawlers read structured data before they read your pretty product page. If your Product and Offer schema is missing or broken, the model has to guess. It won't guess in your favor.
Run every product template through Google's Rich Results Test. You want valid Product markup with price, availability, and aggregateRating pulling through. Check the field definitions against Schema.org Product so you're using the right property names.
Most Shopify themes ship basic Product schema. Most apps break it. Test after every app install. I've seen a review app wipe out working markup on 300 product pages overnight.
Check 3: Are you blocking the AI crawlers?
This one catches people. You can't show up in ChatGPT if you told GPTBot to stay out.
Open your robots.txt and look for these user agents: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, Google-Extended, and PerplexityBot. If they're disallowed, you're invisible to those assistants. Some stores blocked them in a panic during the training-data debates of 2023 and never turned them back on.
Decide on purpose. If you want AI visibility, let the search-focused bots crawl. Blank robots.txt is fine too. Just don't block by accident and wonder why you never get cited.
Check 4: Can the AI quote your policies?
Shoppers ask AI assistants about returns and shipping before they buy. If the model can't find a clear answer on your site, it either guesses or moves to a competitor who spelled it out.
Put your return window and shipping times in plain text on the page. Not a PDF. Not an image. Real text the crawler can read. Thirty-day returns, ships in two business days, free over fifty dollars. Specific and quotable.
Vague policies make the agent nervous. A nervous agent recommends someone else.
Check 5: Do your titles read like spec sheets or ads?
The AI matches your title against a shopper's question. Stuff it with "best" and "amazing" and the model trusts you less. Write it like a spec sheet instead.
Brand. Product type. Size. Color. Material. Count. That's what a model matches against "waterproof hiking boots size 11 for wide feet." Marketing adjectives don't map to anything a shopper actually types.
Rewrite your top 20 sellers first. Those drive most of your revenue anyway, and they're the ones AI will surface most.
Check 6: Is your checkout eligible for agentic purchases?
When an agent runs the cart, your Shopify payment, tax, and shipping settings have to match your feed exactly. Mismatches get orders rejected at the worst possible moment, after the shopper already decided to buy.
Walk through Shopify's Google channel setup docs and confirm your settings line up. Test a real checkout. Make sure tax and shipping calculate the same in your store as they read in your feed.
Check 7: Are you tracking AI orders separately?
You can't manage what you can't see. If AI orders land in the same bucket as everything else, you'll never know if this channel makes you money or costs you.
Tag orders that come from agentic channels in Shopify. Watch margin, return rate, and lifetime value against your own site. Some AI channels carry fees. Some send lower-quality buyers. Some send your best customers. You won't know which until you measure it.
How long does this audit take?
An afternoon for a small catalog. A day or two if you sell thousands of SKUs. The feed and schema checks eat most of the time. The crawler and policy checks take minutes.
Run it, then run it again every quarter. Apps change. Themes update. Google shifts its feed rules. What passed in June can fail by September. Same store. Different result.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most important item on a Shopify AI-readiness audit?
Your product feed. AI assistants read the feed as fact when they pick and recommend products. Wrong price, missing GTIN, or stale stock data drops you out of the answer with no second-page results to save you. Fix the feed before anything else.
How do I know if AI assistants can see my Shopify store?
Check your robots.txt for blocked crawlers like GPTBot, Google-Extended, and PerplexityBot, then validate your Product schema with Google's Rich Results Test. If crawlers are allowed and your structured data passes, the assistants can read your store.
Do I need structured data for AI shopping visibility?
Yes. Product and Offer schema tell AI crawlers your price, stock, and reviews in a format they trust. Without valid markup, the model guesses or skips your listing. Most Shopify themes include basic Product schema, but apps often break it, so test after every install.
How often should I run a Shopify AI-readiness audit?
Every quarter, plus after any major theme update or app install. Feed rules, crawler policies, and schema requirements shift often. A store that passed three months ago can fail today without a single change from you.
Will passing this audit guarantee my products show up in ChatGPT?
No. It makes you eligible and readable, which is the price of entry. Actual visibility also depends on relevance, price, reviews, and how well your titles match shopper questions. The audit clears the technical blockers so the rest of your work can count.
Run the audit before the wave, not after
The next AI shopping surge is coming whether your feed is clean or not. The stores that win are the ones ready before shoppers start buying through chat.
We run this exact audit for Shopify merchants at WRKNG Digital. Feed, schema, crawler access, checkout eligibility, tracking, all of it. See how we get your store ready for agentic commerce.
