How Shopify Agentic Storefronts Work, and What Your Store Needs to Be Included

Shopify just made it possible for customers to buy your products inside ChatGPT. Not by clicking a link to your site. Inside the chat. As of March 2026, Shopify's agentic storefronts are live for millions of merchants, and most store owners don't know they exist, let alone whether their products are eligible.

Here's what's happening and what you need to do right now.

What Are Shopify Agentic Storefronts?

Shopify agentic storefronts package your catalog, checkout, and brand data so AI platforms can present and sell your products natively inside a conversation. No redirect to your site. The shopper asks ChatGPT or Google AI Mode a question, gets a product recommendation, and completes the purchase without ever leaving the AI interface.

Per Shopify's Help Center, agentic storefronts currently work with ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Microsoft Copilot. That covers three of the four largest AI shopping surfaces right now.

This is different from how most Shopify merchants think about AI commerce. They're focused on blog SEO, maybe product feed optimization. But agentic storefronts aren't a content play. They're a direct commerce channel, potentially as significant as adding Amazon or a new sales channel.

How Does the Eligibility Process Work?

You don't manually "apply" for agentic storefronts. Shopify determines eligibility based on a few factors and notifies you in your admin dashboard when you're in.

According to Shopify's official agentic commerce guide, the requirements are:

  • Your store must be on an eligible Shopify plan
  • Your products must be in Shopify Catalog
  • You must be selling to US shoppers (as of the March 2026 rollout)

If all three boxes are checked, your products are automatically discoverable in ChatGPT. The in-chat checkout component (where customers can complete purchase without leaving the AI) is still rolling out in phases.

The key variable you control is Shopify Catalog enrollment and product data quality. Shopify can't syndicate products that are incomplete or missing required fields.

What Does Your Product Data Need to Look Like?

This is where most stores have a real problem. AI channels don't just need your product to exist in the catalog. They need enough context to confidently recommend it in response to specific queries.

Think about what happens when someone asks ChatGPT: "What's the best yoga mat for sweaty hands under $60?" The AI is matching against products in its catalog using descriptions, attributes, and trust signals. If your yoga mat product says "Premium yoga mat. Available in 4 colors.", it's not getting recommended. There's not enough data to match it to that query.

Your product descriptions need to function like answers. What problem does this product solve? What specific user is it for? What makes it different from the obvious alternatives? Those answers need to be in the description itself, not buried in bullet points or implied by the product title.

The structured data layer matters too. Product schema with complete pricing, availability, and review data tells AI platforms that your product information is reliable and current. Missing data = lower confidence = fewer recommendations.

How to Enable Shopify Agentic Storefronts: 5 Steps

Step 1: Enroll in Shopify Catalog

Go to your Shopify Admin and enable Shopify Catalog syndication. This is the foundation. Without it, nothing else matters.

Step 2: Check your eligibility notification

Look in your admin dashboard for a notification about agentic storefront eligibility. If you're eligible and on a qualifying plan, it'll be there. If not, check whether Catalog enrollment is complete and whether you're selling to US shoppers.

Step 3: Audit your product data completeness

Every product needs: complete title, description that answers specific shopper queries, accurate price and availability, GTIN or barcode where applicable, and at least one high-quality image. Run a product data audit, most stores find 30-50% of their catalog has gaps in at least one of these fields.

Step 4: Rewrite descriptions to answer questions

Your most important products need descriptions that directly answer the top queries shoppers ask about that product category. This isn't copywriting. It's answering the question: "Who should buy this and why?"

Step 5: Run an AEO audit on your site

Your storefront pages, not just your product feed, also affect how AI platforms assess your brand. Structured data on product pages, review schema, and FAQ sections all contribute to AI trust signals. An AEO audit will show you what's missing.

FAQ: Shopify Agentic Storefronts
