The Three Policy Pages That Determine Whether Your Shopify Store Can Sell Through ChatGPT

By Steve Merrill | April 18, 2026

On March 24, 2026, Shopify activated Agentic Storefronts for all eligible US merchants. That's 5.6 million stores with a potential direct line into ChatGPT's 880 million monthly active users.

"Eligible" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

Shopify's eligibility requirement isn't a technical audit of your product data or a paid tier. It's three policy pages. Most stores don't have all three properly configured, and they don't know it.

Why Does ChatGPT Require Policy Pages From Shopify Stores?

The requirement exists because ChatGPT is helping transactions on behalf of users. When an AI agent recommends a product and routes a buyer through to purchase, OpenAI is effectively endorsing that merchant relationship. For that to work at scale, merchants need documented policies on returns, data handling, and terms of use.

If a buyer gets a product through ChatGPT and then can't find a return policy, that reflects on the AI platform, not just the store. Shopify's official guidance confirms that completed policies are a hard eligibility gate, not a soft recommendation.

Which Three Pages Are Required?

The requirements are specific. All three must be complete and published in your Shopify Admin under Settings > Policies:

Terms of Service. A real TOS that covers the customer-merchant relationship. Not a blank field. Not a placeholder like "TOS coming soon." Shopify's generator creates a workable baseline, but it has to be saved.

Privacy Policy. This one matters beyond eligibility. Under GDPR and similar frameworks, any store collecting customer data needs a published privacy policy. Shopify's generator covers the basics for most merchants, but you need to save and publish it.

Refund/Return Policy. The one most stores skip or half-finish. A clear statement of your return window, conditions, and how refunds are processed. "All sales final" counts if that's your actual policy. What doesn't count: a blank field or a vague "contact us" placeholder.

How Do You Check Your Current Status?

Go to Shopify Admin. Navigate to Settings, then Policies. You'll see the four policy fields, check that Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and Refund Policy are all populated with real content, not placeholder text.

Then go to Sales Channels and look for the ChatGPT channel. If you see "Ineligible," the policy pages are the first place to fix. If you don't see the ChatGPT channel at all, you may be on a plan tier or in a market that hasn't received access yet, worth a check with Shopify support.

What Happens After You Fix the Policy Pages?

Eligibility typically updates within 24-48 hours. Once you're eligible and the ChatGPT sales channel is active, your product catalog starts feeding into ChatGPT's ACP pipeline. Products become discoverable in ChatGPT's shopping interface for queries relevant to your catalog.

That doesn't mean you're done. Eligibility gets you in the system. Product data quality determines whether you show up for the right queries and whether users actually buy. But you can't work on data quality optimization while your store is sitting in the "ineligible" queue.

Get the policy pages right first. It's the prerequisite for everything else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which policy pages does Shopify require for agentic storefront eligibility?

Shopify requires three completed policy pages: Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and Refund/Return Policy. All three must be saved and published in Settings > Policies, not left as placeholders or blank.

What happens if my Shopify store is missing a policy page?

Your store will be marked ineligible for Shopify's Agentic Storefronts, meaning your products won't appear in ChatGPT's shopping system even though the channel is technically available to Shopify merchants.

Does Shopify auto-generate policy pages?

Yes, Shopify provides a policy generator under Settings > Policies that creates baseline versions of each required policy. You still need to review, customize, and save them. The auto-generated text counts toward eligibility if properly saved.

How long does it take for policy pages to activate agentic storefront eligibility?

Typically within 24-48 hours after you save all three required policy pages. Shopify checks eligibility on a rolling basis, so the ChatGPT sales channel status should update without manual action.
