The 2026 Shopify Agentic Commerce Readiness Checklist (Updated for the Fall Edition)

What is the Shopify agentic commerce readiness checklist?

It's the short list of things your store needs set up before AI agents can find your products and buy them for a shopper. On Shopify in late 2026 that means Shop MCP turned on, Shop Skill live in ChatGPT and Claude, WebMCP tools on your storefront, your Business Knowledge Base filled out, and clean catalog data. Six checks. Run through all of them.

I wrote an earlier version of this back when half of these features were still rumors. Then the Shopify Fall 2026 Edition actually shipped, and a few things I was guessing about turned out to be real and specific. So this is the updated one.

If you read my earlier piece on why AI agents can't find your Shopify products, treat this as the deeper follow-up. That one explained the problem. This one is the checklist to fix it.

Why does this checklist matter right now?

Because a shopper can ask an agent to buy something, and the agent can do it without the shopper ever seeing your site. The agent reads a catalog, picks a product, and checks out. If your store isn't set up to be read that way, you're invisible in that whole flow.

I've watched this happen in audits. A store with great products and a clean site, and the agent still skips it. Not because the products are bad. Because nothing was turned on for the agent to read.

Step 1: Turn on Shop MCP

Shop MCP is one protocol that adds shopping to every agent that supports it. That's the whole point. You turn it on once, and you don't build a separate connection for each AI platform.

Here's the bottom line. If you were dreading a custom integration per assistant, that's not the job anymore. The job is enabling the one protocol and confirming your catalog flows through it.

Step 2: Switch on Shop Skill for ChatGPT and Claude

Shop Skill is what lets ChatGPT and Claude discover your products and run the purchase through Shop Pay. The shopper stays in the chat. The checkout happens with Shop Pay in the background.

Check that your products show up when you ask one of these assistants for something you sell. Then check that the Shop Pay handoff actually completes. Both halves have to work.

Step 3: Expose WebMCP tools on your storefront

WebMCP tools let an agent that lands on your actual site do three things: discover products, create a cart, and guide checkout. This is the agent working inside your storefront instead of pulling you into a chat somewhere else.

Most stores miss this one. They set up the off-site discovery and forget the agent showing up on their own domain. Don't skip it.

Step 4: Fill out your Business Knowledge Base

The Business Knowledge Base is where you review and approve the facts shared with agents. Your policies. Your FAQs. The stuff an agent will repeat when a shopper asks about returns or shipping or sizing.

If you leave it blank, the agent fills the gap on its own. I've seen an assistant invent a return window that didn't exist. The merchant found out from a confused customer. Approve your facts so the agent speaks for you with your words, per the Shopify developer docs on building for agentic commerce.

Step 5: Clean up your catalog data

The Catalog API enhancements changed what agents can see about your products. Compare-at and markdown pricing now show to agents, so a sale price can actually register. Agents can also filter by 3D, video, and sale.

So two jobs here. Set your compare-at and markdown pricing correctly so the discount is visible, not buried. And tag products with 3D and video assets where you have them, because that's now a filter an agent can run.

Messy catalog data was always a quiet tax. Now an agent reads it directly, and the mess costs you the sale.

Step 6: Test what the agent actually buys

Run a real agent through the whole thing. Discovery, cart, checkout. Watch where it stumbles. The gap between "I turned it on" and "it works" is where most stores are sitting right now.

We did this on a client's store last week. Discovery was fine. The cart broke on a variant the agent couldn't resolve. Twenty minutes to fix. Would've been lost orders if nobody checked.

How long does this checklist take?

If your catalog is already clean, a focused afternoon. If it isn't, Step 5 is where the time goes, and it's worth every minute because the other five steps don't matter if the agent reads bad data.

Read that again. Clean data first. Everything else sits on top of it.

FAQ

What is agentic commerce on Shopify?

It's when an AI agent discovers products, builds a cart, and checks out for a shopper. On Shopify that runs through Shop MCP, Shop Skill in ChatGPT and Claude, and WebMCP tools on your storefront, with payment handled by Shop Pay.

Do I need to build something custom for each AI platform?

No. Shop MCP is one protocol that adds shopping to every agent that supports it. You turn it on once.

What is the Business Knowledge Base?

It's where you review and approve the facts shared with agents, like policies and FAQs, so an agent answers questions about your store with information you control.

How do I show sale prices to AI agents?

Set compare-at and markdown pricing in your catalog. The Catalog API enhancements pass that pricing to agents and let them filter by sale, 3D, and video.
