9 Product Feed Fixes That Make Shopify Stores Visible to AI Shopping Assistants

The product feed fixes that most improve AI shopping visibility are GTINs, accurate availability, specific titles, and real-time price sync. AI assistants read your feed before they read anything else, so a clean feed is the price of entry. Here are the nine that move the needle.

1. Add GTINs to every product

The GTIN is how an assistant confirms a product is the real thing and compares it across stores. Missing GTINs get filtered out of many AI shopping results. This is the first field I check in any audit.

2. Fill the brand field

A blank brand field makes a product hard to match and easy to skip. Even private-label products need a brand value. Assistants group and compare by brand constantly.

3. Set accurate availability

An item marked in stock that's actually sold out trains the assistant to distrust your whole feed. Availability has to match live inventory. Google Merchant Center's availability spec covers the exact values.

4. Use specific product titles

"Blue Shirt" loses. "Men's Organic Cotton Oxford Shirt, Light Blue, Slim Fit" wins. Put the attributes shoppers search in the title, front-loaded. Assistants weight the title heavily when matching.

5. Add the right Google product category

The correct category helps assistants place your product in the right comparison set. Guessing or leaving it blank buries you in the wrong group. Use the official taxonomy value.

6. Include high-quality image links

Feeds need working, high-resolution image URLs. Broken or low-res images get products demoted or dropped. Assistants and the shopping surfaces behind them check image quality.

7. Fill color, size, and material

These attributes power filtered recommendations. When a shopper asks for a "medium wool sweater in gray," only products with those fields filled can answer. Blank variants disappear from filtered results.

8. Keep prices synced in real time

A price mismatch between your feed and your store is a trust killer and can get your feed flagged. Real-time sync keeps the assistant confident the price it quotes is the price a shopper pays.

9. Write descriptions with real specs

Descriptions feed the assistant facts to cite. Dimensions, materials, care, compatibility, and use case all help. According to Shopify's own guidance, richer product data improves performance across shopping surfaces.

How We Chose This List

These nine come from feed audits across live Shopify stores and the fields AI shopping surfaces actually require. We ranked them by how often a blank value caused a product to get skipped.

FAQ

Which feed fix matters most for AI visibility?

GTINs and accurate availability. Missing GTINs filter you out, and false availability destroys feed trust.

Do I need a paid app to fix my product feed?

Not always. Shopify's native Google channel handles much of it. The work is data quality, which is mostly manual cleanup at first.

How often should my feed update?

Price and availability should sync in real time or at least several times a day. Stale feeds get demoted.

Does a clean feed help ChatGPT and Perplexity too?

Yes. The same clean data that powers Google Shopping helps assistants across the board read and recommend you.
