An AI shopping agent reaches your product description last, not first. It reads these eight feed fields before a single word of your copy. Get them right or the copy never matters.
I spent years polishing product descriptions while the fields that actually decide recommendations sat half-blank. Learn from that. Fix the feed first.
1. Availability
The first field checked. An agent won't recommend what it can't confirm is in stock, so a blank here drops you before anything else.
Mark it clearly and match it to your live page.
2. Price
Must match the live product page to the cent. A mismatch is a wrong recommendation waiting to happen, so agents distrust it.
Offer schema and your feed should agree exactly.
3. Product title
Clear, specific titles help an agent confirm the item matches the request. Vague titles force guessing.
Lead with the product, not your brand slogan. The agent wants the what, fast.
4. GTIN or MPN
The identifier that lets an agent match your product to the catalog it already trusts. Missing it hands close calls to competitors.
Add it to every product that has one. Google's spec treats identifiers as core.
5. Brand
Confirms product identity and helps break ties between similar items. A blank brand field is a missed signal.
Fill it on every product, even your own house brand.
6. Condition
New, used, or refurbished. Agents need this to avoid recommending the wrong thing to a shopper who asked for new.
Cheap to fill, and it removes a whole category of mismatch.
7. Shipping
One of the two questions every shopper's agent asks before it commits. Answer it in the feed and you clear a hurdle competitors leave standing.
Vague or missing shipping data is a quiet reason agents move on.
8. Returns policy
The second question. A findable, parseable returns policy tells the agent this store is safe to complete on.
Put it where the agent can reach it, not buried three clicks deep.
How we ranked these fields
The order reflects what agents check first based on how each field is used in product matching and merchant specs. Availability and price gate everything; identifiers and policies break ties.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which product feed fields do AI shopping agents read first?
Availability and price come first, since an agent needs to confirm a product is in stock and correctly priced before it will recommend it. Then title, GTIN or MPN, brand, condition, shipping, and returns get read to confirm identity and break ties. Your written description comes last.
Why does my product description matter less than the feed?
Because the feed and structured fields are what an agent reads to decide whether you make the shortlist. The description shapes the pitch after you're already in the running. If the feed fields are blank, the agent never reaches your description.
Do I need a GTIN on every product?
Add GTIN or MPN to every product that has one. It lets agents match your item to the wider catalog they trust, which decides close calls. Custom or handmade products without a manufacturer identifier can use MPN or be marked as having no identifier, but fill it wherever one exists.
