llms.txt for Shopify Stores: The 15-Minute Setup That Tells AI Exactly What to Recommend

Most Shopify stores don't have a llms.txt file. That's going to look like a big mistake in 12 months.

llms.txt is a plain-text file you add to your store's root directory that tells AI crawlers and assistants exactly what your store sells, who it's for, and what to recommend. It's modeled after robots.txt — except instead of telling bots what to avoid, you're telling AI what to prioritize.

The spec was proposed by llmstxt.org in late 2024. Adoption has been slow. For Shopify stores, that means opportunity. While your competitors aren't doing this, you can be.

Setup time: 15 minutes. Cost: zero.

What Is llms.txt and Why Does It Matter?

When ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Google Gemini crawls your site, they're trying to figure out what you sell, who you serve, and whether your products are relevant to a shopper's question. Right now, they have to infer that from your homepage copy, product titles, and whatever metadata you have in place.

llms.txt gives them a direct briefing. A single file that answers the questions AI assistants are trying to answer:

  • What does this store sell?
  • Who is it for?
  • What are the most important products?
  • What categories exist?
  • What does this brand NOT sell?

Clear signals reduce ambiguity. Reduced ambiguity means more accurate recommendations. More accurate recommendations mean more qualified traffic.

What Goes in a Shopify llms.txt File?

The format is intentionally simple. No HTML. No JSON. Plain text.

Here's what to include:

1. Brand description (2-3 sentences)
What you sell. Who you sell to. What makes you different. Write it the way you'd explain it to a friend.

2. Primary product categories
List your main product categories in plain language. Use the words your customers use, not internal SKU categories.

3. Hero products or top sellers
5-10 products with URLs. If an AI agent is going to recommend one thing from your store, these are the options.

4. Target customer
One sentence. "Designed for women ages 25-45 who prioritize sustainable fashion" is useful context. "Premium quality for discerning customers" is not.

5. What you don't sell
Optional but useful. If someone asks an AI for "running shoes" and you only sell casual sneakers, saying so prevents irrelevant recommendations.

How Do I Add llms.txt to Shopify?

Shopify doesn't have a native "static files" section the way a traditional server does, but there are two reliable methods.

Method 1: Shopify Files (easiest)

In your Shopify admin, go to Content > Files. Upload your llms.txt file. Shopify will host it at a CDN URL. You'll need to add a redirect from /llms.txt to that CDN URL in your URL redirects section (Online Store > Navigation > URL Redirects).

Method 2: Theme code injection

If you're on a custom theme, you can add a template file. This is slightly more technical but gives you cleaner URL handling. Your developer can handle it in under an hour.

After setup, verify your file is live by visiting yourdomain.com/llms.txt in a browser. You should see the plain text file with no styling or navigation.

Does llms.txt Actually Work?

The honest answer: we're in early days. The major AI labs have acknowledged the spec, but confirmed adoption in their crawlers is still being rolled out. Perplexity has publicly stated they read llms.txt. OpenAI's crawler GPTBot does read robot-adjacent files. Google is watching the space.

I put it this way: there is no downside to having this file. There is potential upside. And the stores that have it when adoption becomes standard will already have accurate data in the AI systems. The stores that don't will be playing catch-up.

Same story. Different year.

The broader point is that AI assistants are increasingly relying on structured signals over raw crawled content. llms.txt is one of those signals. Schema markup is another. Your product feed is another. The more structured signals you give AI, the more accurately it represents your store.

FAQ

What is llms.txt for Shopify?

llms.txt is a plain-text file stored at the root of your Shopify store (yourdomain.com/llms.txt) that describes your brand, products, categories, and target customers to AI assistants and crawlers. It follows the open standard defined at llmstxt.org and helps AI accurately represent and recommend your store.

Do AI assistants actually read llms.txt?

Perplexity has confirmed they read llms.txt files. OpenAI's GPTBot and other major AI crawlers are increasingly supporting the standard. Early adoption means your accurate data gets into AI systems before competitors who haven't set it up yet.

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

They're similar in structure — both are plain-text files at your site root — but they serve different purposes. robots.txt tells crawlers what to avoid. llms.txt tells AI assistants what to prioritize and how to understand your store's content and products.

How long does it take to set up llms.txt on Shopify?

Writing the content takes 10-15 minutes. Uploading and setting up the redirect in Shopify takes another 5 minutes. It's one of the fastest AI visibility improvements you can make.

Will llms.txt improve my SEO?

Not directly. llms.txt is specifically for AI assistants, not traditional search engine crawlers. But the discipline of clearly articulating what you sell and who you serve in plain language often surfaces improvements that help both AI and SEO simultaneously.
