Your Shopify store is ready for agentic commerce when an AI agent can read your product data, complete a purchase without friction, and trust your pricing and stock. Fail any one of those and the agent moves to a competitor. Simple test. Hard to pass.

Agentic commerce is the part of this shift that keeps me up at night, in a good way. It's not AI recommending your product anymore. It's AI buying it. For the shopper. Without them ever seeing your homepage. Here's how to tell if you're ready.

What is agentic commerce, in plain terms?

An AI agent does the shopping. The buyer says "order me a replacement filter for my fridge," and the agent finds it, compares options, and completes the purchase. Your store never gets a human visitor for that sale. The agent is the customer now, and it reads data, not design.

Can an AI agent even read your products?

This is test one. Agents pull from structured product data and feeds, same as AI shopping assistants. If your Product schema is missing or your feed attributes are blank, the agent can't evaluate your item against the request. It skips you. Not because you lost. Because you weren't legible.

Most stores fail here. We ran thousands of products through our audit and the majority didn't have the structured data an agent would need to transact. Blank fields. Missing offers. No machine-readable price.

Is your checkout agent-friendly?

Test two. An agent hates friction the way a human hates a broken link, only it just leaves. Forced account creation, unclear pricing, hidden shipping, surprise steps, all of it stops an agent cold. Shopify's checkout settings let you strip most of this. Walk your own checkout as if you were a machine. Count the steps. Cut the ones that don't need a human.

Do your prices and stock actually match everywhere?

Test three. An agent checks your feed, your schema, and your live page. If they disagree, the agent can't trust the transaction, so it won't complete it. I've seen stores lose agent-driven sales to nothing more than a stale availability flag. Sync your data. Everywhere. Every time.

Are you letting the right crawlers in?

Test four. Agentic shopping depends on crawlers that index your catalog. Some stores block them in robots.txt without realizing it. OpenAI documents its crawlers, and others publish theirs too. Check your file. Blocking the agents that bring buyers is a wound you inflict on yourself.

What should I fix first?

Product data, then checkout friction. Data gets you considered. Frictionless checkout gets you the sale. The other two are quick checks once those are solid. None of this needs a massive budget. It needs attention to the boring layer most operators ignore.

Why prepare now instead of waiting?

Because the window is the whole story. I watched Facebook flip from organic to pay-to-play in 2014. My online sales fell from $50K a month to $2K almost overnight, and the brands that had adapted early compounded away from the rest of us. I never caught up. Agentic commerce is the same shape. The gate opens once. You either walk through early or you spend years chasing the people who did.

FAQ

Q: What is agentic commerce?

It's when an AI agent browses, compares, and completes a purchase for a shopper. The agent reads data and transacts, so your store has to be machine-readable end to end.

Q: How do I know if my store is ready?

Check complete product data, low-friction checkout, synced pricing and stock, and open crawler access. Fail one and agents skip you.

Q: Is agentic commerce live on Shopify yet?

Pieces are rolling out and expanding. Stores preparing now will be ready at full scale, which is the advantage.

Q: Do I need a developer for this?

For schema and feed work at scale, usually. For checkout cleanup and crawler checks, often not. Start with what you control today.
