How to Optimize Your Shopify Product Feed for AI Shopping Agents, Field by Field

Your product feed is the version of your store an AI shopping agent actually reads. Not your homepage. Not your brand story. The feed.

Most Shopify feeds are half-blank in the fields that decide recommendations. I've run this check on dozens of stores. The same four or five fields come back empty every time. Let's fix them in order.

Which feed field should you fix first?

Availability. An agent won't recommend a product it can't confirm is in stock, so a blank or wrong availability flag drops you before any other field matters. Fix it across your whole catalog first.

Match the feed to reality. If the feed says in stock and the page says sold out, the agent trusts neither. Google's Merchant Center spec treats availability as required for exactly this reason.

How should price and sale price be set?

Price in the feed must match the price on the live product page, to the cent. Mismatches are the fastest way to lose an agent's trust, because a wrong price is a wrong recommendation.

If you run sales, use the sale price field correctly instead of overwriting your base price. Agents read both. Clean sale data can win you the pick when a shopper's assistant is told to find a deal.

Do GTIN and MPN really matter that much?

Yes. The GTIN lets an agent match your product to the broader catalog it already trusts. Without it, the agent can't fully confirm what your item is, so in a close call it favors the competitor who provided one.

Add GTIN or MPN to every product that has one. This one field quietly decides a lot of ties. I've seen a store jump in recommendations from nothing more than filling GTINs it already had sitting in a spreadsheet.

What about brand, condition, and shipping?

These are your tie-breakers. Brand confirms identity. Condition rules out confusion on new versus used. Shipping and returns answer the two questions every shopper's agent asks before it commits.

Fill them completely. A product that answers shipping and returns in the feed beats an identical one that leaves the agent guessing. Small fields. Real difference.

How do you keep the feed clean over time?

Check it monthly. Re-export, scan for blanks and mismatches, and confirm everything renders in the raw feed rather than through a script that loads late. Set a reminder so it actually happens.

Here's the part people miss. A feed decays. New products ship with blank fields, apps change output, a theme update breaks a tag. The stores that stay visible treat feed hygiene as a monthly habit, not a one-time project. Use Google's Product structured data guidelines as your checklist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Shopify product feed field should I optimize first for AI shopping agents?

Availability. An AI agent won't recommend a product it can't confirm is in stock, so a blank or wrong availability flag drops you before any other field is even read. Fix availability across your whole catalog first, and make sure the feed matches what the live page shows.

Does adding GTIN to my Shopify feed improve AI visibility?

Yes. The GTIN lets an agent match your product to the wider catalog it already trusts. Without it, the agent can't fully confirm the item, so in a close call it favors a competitor who supplied one. Add GTIN or MPN to every product that has one.

How often should I check my Shopify product feed?

Monthly. Feeds decay as new products ship with blank fields, apps change their output, and theme updates break tags. Re-export, scan for blank or mismatched fields, and confirm everything renders in the raw feed rather than through JavaScript that loads late.
