How Do I Know If AI Can Find and Recommend My Shopify Products?

Most Shopify stores are invisible to AI right now. That's not a prediction. I can show you in about five minutes, and so can you.

Here's the thing. AI shopping assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews are picking products for people every day. If your store isn't in the answer, you're not losing to a better ad. You're just not in the conversation. Let me walk you through how to check.

How Do I Test If AI Can Find My Products?

Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask it to recommend a product in your category, the way a real shopper would. Something like "best waterproof hiking boots under $150." Watch what comes back. If your store isn't named or linked, that's your answer. You're not visible.

Do this for five or six of your top product types. Vary the phrasing. Shoppers don't all ask the same way. I've run this exact test on 40-plus stores, and the pattern almost never changes. The brands with clean data show up. The rest don't.

One caveat. AI answers shift run to run. Ask a few times. You're looking for a pattern, not a single result.

Why Can't AI See My Shopify Store?

Usually it's the data. AI reads your product feed and your page structure before it recommends anything. When titles are vague, attributes are missing, and pages are mostly images, the AI can't tell what you sell. So it picks a store it can read.

We ran 2,400 products through an audit last year. Only 11% had the structured data an AI needs to recommend them. That's not a small gap. That's 8 or 9 out of every 10 products the AI simply can't work with.

The fix isn't magic. It's boring, careful data work. And it's the thing most stores skip.

What Product Data Does AI Actually Read?

Start with the feed. AI leans on the same structured product data that powers Google Shopping. Google's product data specification lays out the fields: title, description, price, availability, GTIN, and product attributes like color, size, and material.

Then there's your on-page structured data. Schema.org's Product type and the Offer type tell AI the price, stock, and product details in a format machines trust. If those are missing or broken, you've handed the AI a blindfold.

Last, the page text itself. AI needs real, substantive copy to extract and quote. A product page that's all photos and a two-word description gives it nothing to work with.

How Do I Check My Structured Data?

Run a few product URLs through Schema.org's validator or Google's Rich Results Test. You're checking two things. Does Product schema exist, and is it valid. If you see errors or missing fields, that's a direct hit to your AI visibility.

Watch for duplicates too. Two Product blocks or two FAQ blocks on one page can cause AI and Google to drop both. One clean block per page. That's it.

What Should I Fix First?

Fix the feed first. Clean titles. Complete attributes. Real availability. This is the layer AI reads before anything else, so it gives you the fastest lift.

Then add or repair Product and Offer schema on every product page. Then thicken your thin product descriptions so there's actual text for AI to pull. In that order. Data, schema, content.

I made a version of this mistake myself years ago in a different channel. I had a great product and terrible data, and I couldn't figure out why competitors kept beating me. The product was never the problem. The data was.

How Long Until AI Picks Up the Changes?

It's not instant. AI models and the search layers behind them re-crawl on their own schedule. Give it a few weeks after you fix the data, then run your test prompts again. Track whether you start showing up. That's the real scoreboard, not traffic reports.

FAQ

How do I know if ChatGPT can recommend my products?

Ask ChatGPT to recommend a product in your category and see if your store appears. Test several product types and phrasings. If you never show up, your product data is the first thing to check.

Why do competitors show up in AI answers and I don't?

They usually have cleaner product feeds and valid structured data. AI can read their catalog and match it to a shopper's question. If your data is thin, the AI picks the store it can understand.

What's the fastest way to become AI-visible?

Fix your product feed first: clean titles, complete attributes, accurate price and availability. That's the layer AI reads first, so it gives the fastest improvement.

Do I need special software to check this?

No. You can start with a few prompts inside ChatGPT and Perplexity, plus a free schema validator. Software helps you track it over time, but the first check is free.
