How does ChatGPT decide which B2B vendors to recommend?
ChatGPT recommends the B2B brands it sees named again and again across sources it trusts. Review sites, comparison posts, analyst reports, and well-structured pages. It does not pull your brand from your homepage. It pulls it from everywhere else.
That is the part most founders miss.
You can have the best product in your category and still never show up when a buyer asks ChatGPT, "What are the best vendors for X?" Because ChatGPT is not reading your sales deck. It is reading the open web and the sites it has indexed, then stitching together an answer from what other people say about you.
I had a hard time accepting this at first. I spent years on a $10M brand thinking the website did the selling. Now the recommendation happens before anyone reaches your site.
What signals make ChatGPT name your brand?
ChatGPT weights a handful of signals when it builds a vendor shortlist. Third-party mentions carry the most weight. If your brand shows up in enough credible places, the model treats you as a real option.
Here are the signals that move the needle.
Third-party mentions. Being named in articles you did not write. A journalist, a blogger, a Reddit thread, a LinkedIn post. The model counts these as votes.
Review sites. ChatGPT reads G2, Capterra, and TrustRadius. These sites rank vendors by category, which is exactly the shape of question a buyer asks AI. A strong G2 profile with real reviews is one of the fastest ways in.
Comparison and roundup content. The "best project management tools for 2026" posts. The "X vs Y" breakdowns. When ChatGPT answers a vendor question, it leans on content already shaped as a comparison. If you are missing from those lists, you are missing from the answer.
Structured data. Schema markup on your product, organization, and FAQ pages tells AI what you do and who you serve in plain terms. Google's own structured data docs explain the formats, and the same markup helps AI crawlers parse you faster.
Authority. Analyst coverage, earned press, and a track record the model can find. Gartner coverage still carries weight in enterprise categories, and ChatGPT reads it.
Why do review sites matter so much for AI recommendations?
Review sites are pre-sorted answers. When someone asks ChatGPT for the top vendors in a category, the model wants a source that already ranks vendors in that exact category. G2 and Capterra do that for a living.
So the model reaches for them.
We ran target prompts for a B2B SaaS client last quarter. The two competitors ChatGPT named most often both had 400-plus reviews on G2. Our client had 38. Same product quality. Different visibility. The gap was not the software. It was the paper trail.
Reviews also feed the model specifics. Use cases, company sizes, integrations. That detail is what lets ChatGPT say "good for mid-market teams that need Salesforce integration" instead of a vague one-liner.
How do you actually earn ChatGPT recommendations? The steps.
This is the part you can control. Five moves, in order.
Step one. Build your review site presence. Claim your G2, Capterra, and TrustRadius profiles. Fill out every field. Then run a simple campaign to get 30 to 50 real reviews from happy customers over 90 days. This is the single biggest move for most B2B brands.
Step two. Get into comparison and roundup content. Find the "best tools for [your category]" posts that already rank. Pitch the writers. Offer data, a free account, a quote. If a list is missing you, that is a direct line between you and a ChatGPT answer.
Step three. Add structured data to your site. Organization schema, Product schema, and FAQ schema at minimum. This will not make ChatGPT love you on its own. It makes you readable, which is the floor you have to clear before anything else counts.
Step four. Publish answer-shaped content. Write the posts that answer the exact questions your buyers ask AI. Lead with a direct answer. Name your sources. Use real numbers. Search Engine Land has tracked how AI answers favor content that gives a clean, sourced response up top, and that pattern holds for B2B.
Step five. Measure it. Run your top 10 buyer prompts through ChatGPT once a month. Note whether you get named, cited, or ignored. Track the trend. What gets measured gets fixed.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?
Expect 60 to 120 days before you see movement, and that is if you push on review sites and third-party mentions hard. The model updates its view of you as the open web updates its view of you.
Not overnight. But faster than SEO ever moved.
The brands winning this right now started eight months ago. There are still whole categories where nobody has done the work. That is the opening.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ChatGPT read my company website directly?
Sometimes, through its browsing and indexed data. But it weights third-party sources more than your own pages. What other people say about you carries more trust than what you say about yourself, so the bulk of the work happens off your site.
Do I need paid G2 placement to get recommended?
No. ChatGPT reads the organic G2 category pages and reviews, not the paid ad slots. A complete profile with 30-plus genuine reviews does more for AI visibility than any paid placement. Spend on getting real reviews first.
Will schema markup alone get my brand recommended?
No. Schema makes your site readable to AI crawlers, which is necessary but not enough. Think of it as clearing the bar to be considered. The recommendation still comes from third-party mentions, reviews, and authority signals off your site.
How is this different from SEO?
SEO aims to rank a page in a list of links. This aims to get your brand named inside a single AI answer. The tactics overlap, but the goal shifts from traffic to being the answer the buyer hears first.
What is the single fastest move for a B2B brand?
Reviews on G2 and Capterra. For most B2B brands, a focused 90-day review campaign moves the needle faster than anything else because ChatGPT leans on those sites so heavily when it ranks vendors.
