How to Audit Your Shopify Store's AI Visibility in One Afternoon

Most store owners have no idea whether an AI assistant can find their products. They assume good Google rankings carry over. They don't.

You can find out this afternoon. No tool, no budget, just the assistants your buyers already use and an honest look at what they say back.

Here's the audit.

Can I check my AI visibility myself?

Yes. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google, and ask them what your buyers ask. The answers tell you whether you exist in the AI layer.

This isn't a proxy. It's the real thing. If the assistant doesn't name you when it should, that's your visibility, measured directly.

Step one: ask the questions your buyers actually ask

Write down ten questions a real buyer would type. "Best merino base layer for skiing." "Affordable standing desk under 400." Use your categories, not your brand name.

Then ask each assistant. Note who gets named. If competitors show up and you don't, you just found the gap that matters most.

Step two: ask directly about your store

Now name yourself. "What does [your store] sell." "Is [your store] good for [category]." See if the model knows you and whether it gets the facts right.

A blank or wrong answer here means the model has nothing reliable to pull. That traces straight back to thin pages and inconsistent data.

Step three: check what the machines can read

Look at one product page's source and your Product schema. Run it through the Schema.org validator. Check whether your robots.txt is blocking AI crawlers.

If the schema is missing fields, or your robots file blocks the crawlers, the model was never going to see you clearly. Fix the plumbing before you blame the content.

Step four: write down the pattern

By now you'll see it. Either the assistants can't find you, or they find you and get it wrong, or the data behind the page doesn't support what the page claims.

That pattern is your roadmap. If you want the version we run at scale, across every prompt and page, a WRKNG audit does exactly this and hands you the fix list.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check if AI assistants can see my Shopify store?

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google the questions your buyers ask, using your categories rather than your brand name. If competitors get named and you don't, that's your AI visibility measured directly. Then ask about your store by name to see if the model has your facts right.

Do good Google rankings mean good AI visibility?

No. AI assistants read structured data, consistent product facts, and direct answers rather than ranking signals alone. Stores that rank well on Google are routinely invisible to ChatGPT and Perplexity because their pages don't state checkable answers or their schema is thin.

What technical things block AI visibility?

Missing or invalid Product schema, inconsistent data between page, schema, and feed, and a robots.txt that blocks AI crawlers. Validate your schema and confirm your robots file isn't excluding the assistants before blaming your content.

How long does an AI visibility audit take?

A useful self-audit takes an afternoon: ten buyer questions across three assistants, a few direct questions about your store, and a schema and robots.txt check on one product page. That's enough to see whether you're invisible, misread, or unsupported by your own data.
