How do you audit Shopify product data for AI readiness?
Audit your product data for AI readiness by checking four things across your entire catalog: attribute completeness, title clarity, structured data coverage, and feed accuracy. Score each product, flag the gaps, and fix the worst offenders first. Most stores fail on completeness before anything else.
This is unglamorous work. It's also the work that decides whether an AI can recommend you. Let's make it concrete.
Step 1: Check attribute completeness
Attribute completeness is the percentage of your products that have every core field filled in — title, description, price, availability, product type, brand, material, and GTIN. This is the number one reason AI skips a store.
Export your product catalog to a spreadsheet. Count how many products are missing any core attribute. If more than 20% have gaps, that's your first project. When we run this on real Shopify stores, the average is worse than owners expect — usually a third of the catalog has at least one hole.
Step 2: Grade your product titles
A good product title names the actual product plainly. "Merino Wool Base Layer — Men's Long Sleeve" beats "The Adventurer" every time, because an AI can match the first one to a shopper's request and can't do anything with the second.
Read through your titles. Flag every clever, brand-only name that hides what the product is. Those are invisible to intent matching. Clarity outranks personality here.
Step 3: Confirm your structured data coverage
Structured data is the schema markup that tells machines what your page contains. At minimum you need Product, Offer, and AggregateRating markup on every product page. Test it with Google's Rich Results Test and validate against Schema.org's Product spec.
Run a sample of product URLs through the test. If schema is missing or throwing errors, the AI is reading a blank where your specs should be. Shopify's SEO documentation covers where to add this in your theme.
Step 4: Verify feed accuracy
Feed accuracy means the price and availability an AI reads match what a buyer sees at checkout. Nothing kills trust faster than an agent quoting a price that's wrong or recommending a sold-out item.
Spot-check your feed against your live store. Look for stale prices, wrong availability, and duplicate entries. Fix the sync at the source, not one product at a time.
How do I turn this into a repeatable score?
Give each product a simple grade. One point each for complete attributes, a clear title, valid schema, and accurate feed data. Four out of four is AI-ready. Anything under three needs work.
Here's the bottom line: you can't fix what you haven't measured. A scored catalog turns a vague worry into a punch list.
How often should I re-run this audit?
Re-run a full audit quarterly and spot-check after any big catalog change. Product data drifts. New products come in half-finished, and old ones go stale. A quarterly pass keeps you readable as AI shopping keeps growing.
Start this week. The stores auditing now are building the lead. The ones waiting will be doing it under pressure later.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a Shopify product AI-ready?
An AI-ready product has complete attributes, a plain descriptive title, valid Product and AggregateRating schema, and an accurate feed where price and availability match checkout.
What is the most common Shopify product data problem?
Incomplete attributes. On real stores, roughly a third of the catalog is missing at least one core field like material, GTIN, or product type, which causes AI to skip those products.
How do I test my product schema?
Run product URLs through Google's Rich Results Test and validate against Schema.org's Product spec. Missing or erroring schema means AI reads a blank where your specs should be.
How often should I audit product data for AI?
Run a full audit quarterly and spot-check after major catalog changes. Product data drifts as new items arrive half-finished and old ones go stale.
