An AI agent buying on someone's behalf doesn't wander your homepage. It builds a shortlist, scores it, and picks. The whole thing happens in seconds and you never see it.
The question that matters for your store is simple. What is the agent scoring, and are you giving it the facts to score you well?
What is an AI shopping agent actually doing?
It's matching a request to products it can trust. Someone says "find me a waterproof jacket under $150 that ships by Friday." The agent turns that into filters: category, price, availability, shipping speed.
Then it looks for stores whose data answers those filters cleanly. The Agentic Commerce Protocol that OpenAI and Stripe built runs on exactly this: structured product and checkout data an agent can act on without guessing.
Why do agents favor stores with complete data?
Because an agent gets penalized for being wrong. Recommending a jacket that's sold out, or mispricing it, breaks the trust of the person it's shopping for.
So it plays it safe. It favors the store that confirmed price, stock, and shipping in machine-readable form. Read that again. The agent isn't picking the best product. It's picking the product it can be confident about.
What makes a store invisible to an agent?
Facts trapped where a machine can't read them. Specs inside an image. Price loaded by JavaScript after the page. A shipping policy buried three clicks deep.
A human works around all of that. An agent doesn't. It reads what's there on load and scores what it can confirm. Everything else is a blank, and blanks lose.
How is this different from ranking on Google?
Google ranks pages and lets a person choose. An agent chooses for the person. There's no page two. There's a shortlist of three, and you're on it or you aren't.
That changes the math. On Google, being tenth still gets some clicks. With an agent, being fourth gets nothing. The gap between shortlisted and not is the whole game.
What should you fix first?
Make your core facts machine-readable on your best sellers. Availability, price, shipping, returns, in the raw HTML and the feed. Then test it.
Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI to shop your category and see if you show up. I've seen this movie before. In 2013 a platform changed under me and I refused to look until my sales fell off a cliff. Look now, while looking still helps.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does an AI agent choose which store to buy from?
It turns the shopper's request into filters, category, price, availability, shipping, then favors stores whose product data answers those filters in a machine-readable way. Agents are penalized for wrong recommendations, so they pick the store they can be most confident about, not necessarily the one with the best product.
Why would an agent skip my store even if my product is better?
Because it couldn't confirm your facts. If price or availability is loaded by JavaScript, or specs are trapped in an image, the agent reads a blank and scores you low. A slightly worse product with complete, readable data beats a better product the agent can't verify.
Is optimizing for AI agents different from SEO?
Yes. SEO ranks pages so a person can choose; an agent chooses for the person from a short list. There's no page two with agents, so being just outside the shortlist earns nothing. The priority shifts from ranking to being confirmable.
