How to Create an llms.txt File for Your Shopify Store

By Steve Merrill, Founder of WRKNG Digital — March 20, 2026

An llms.txt file is one of the simplest things you can add to your Shopify store to improve AI visibility, and almost nobody has one yet. It takes about 30 minutes to create, costs nothing, and immediately helps AI assistants understand what your business does, what you sell, and where to find your best content.

If you're wondering why your store doesn't show up when people ask ChatGPT or Perplexity for product recommendations, a missing llms.txt is part of the answer.

What Is llms.txt and Why Does It Matter?

An llms.txt file is a plain text file hosted at yourstore.com/llms.txt that provides AI language models with a structured overview of your website. Think of it as a README file for AI, it tells them who you are, what you do, and what content is worth paying attention to.

The concept emerged from the AI development community as a standard way for websites to communicate with language models. Similar to how robots.txt tells search crawlers what they can access, llms.txt tells AI models what your site is about and how it's organized.

Here's why it matters for ecommerce: when an AI assistant is trying to decide whether to recommend your store, it needs to quickly understand your business. Without llms.txt, the AI has to crawl your entire site and piece together context from scattered pages. With llms.txt, you hand it a clean summary on a silver platter.

Stores with llms.txt files appear in AI recommendations more consistently. It's not the only factor, structured data and content quality matter too, but it's one of the easiest wins available right now.

What Goes in Your llms.txt File

Your llms.txt should include five key sections:

  1. 1. Business Identity

Start with your business name, what you do, and who you serve. Be specific and factual, AI models process this as entity data, not marketing copy.

Example: "WRKNG Digital builds AI-powered marketing tools for Shopify stores, specializing in making ecommerce brands visible to AI shopping assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI."

Include your location, founding year, and founder name if relevant. The more entity-level facts you provide, the more confidently AI can associate your brand with specific topics.

  1. 2. Product or Service Categories

List your main product categories or service offerings. For a product store, this means your top-level collections. For a service business, this means your core offerings.

Keep it clean and descriptive. "Shoes" and "Men's sustainable running shoes" and "Women's trail hiking boots." The specificity helps AI match your products to relevant queries.

  1. 3. Key Pages and Content

Link to your most important pages with brief descriptions. This tells AI which pages to focus on when answering questions about your business or product category.

Include: your homepage, about page, best blog posts, most important product collections, and any tools or calculators you offer. For each link, write a one-sentence description of what the page covers.

  1. 4. Authority and Expertise Signals

Mention what makes your business authoritative. This could include:

  • Years in business
  • Founder's relevant experience
  • Number of customers served
  • Notable publications or media coverage
  • Awards or certifications
  • Partnerships with recognized brands

These aren't bragging points, they're trust signals that AI uses to evaluate whether to cite you over a competitor.

  1. 5. Content Topics

List the topics your site covers authoritatively. This helps AI associate your brand with specific subject areas for future queries.

For example: "Our blog covers AI commerce readiness, product feed optimization for AI shopping assistants, structured data implementation for Shopify, agentic commerce trends, and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) strategies for ecommerce."

How to Add llms.txt to Your Shopify Store

Method 1: Through Shopify Admin (Easiest)

Shopify doesn't have a native llms.txt feature, but you can add it through your theme files:

  1. 1. Go to Online Store then Themes in your Shopify admin
  2. 2. Click the three dots menu, then Edit code
  3. 3. In the Templates folder, create a new template
  4. 4. You may need to create a page that serves plain text content at the /llms.txt path

The simplest approach: create a page in Shopify with the handle "llms-txt" and use a custom template that outputs plain text without your theme's header and footer.

Method 2: Direct File Upload

If you have access to your store's asset files or use a custom deployment, you can upload llms.txt directly to your root directory. This is the cleanest approach but requires some technical setup.

Method 3: Using a Redirect

Create your llms.txt content as a raw text file hosted on a CDN or storage service, then set up a redirect from yourstore.com/llms.txt to the hosted file. This works but adds a redirect step that some crawlers may not follow.

The Extended Version: llms-full.txt

Some stores also create an llms-full.txt file that provides more comprehensive information, full product catalogs, complete blog post summaries, detailed team bios, and comprehensive FAQ content.

The standard llms.txt is a concise overview (typically 500-2000 words). The llms-full.txt can be much longer and more detailed, giving AI models deeper context when they need it.

If you're going to create one file, start with llms.txt. Add llms-full.txt later if you want to provide AI models with more granular information about your products and content.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Don't Write Marketing Copy

Your llms.txt should read like a factual brief, not a sales page. AI models discount promotional language and look for verifiable facts. "The world's most new outdoor gear" is useless. "Ultralight backpacking tents ranging from 1.5 to 4.2 lbs, tested on the PCT and AT" is useful.

Don't Forget to Update It

Your llms.txt should reflect your current business. If you add new product categories, publish important content, or change your business focus, update the file. Set a monthly reminder to review and refresh it.

Don't Include Everything

Be selective about what you link to and describe. AI models perform better with a curated overview than an exhaustive list. Focus on your most important, highest-quality pages and products.

Don't Skip the Expertise Section

This is where many stores drop the ball. AI assistants need authority signals to decide whether to trust and cite a source. If you don't tell them why you're credible, they'll favor sources that do.

How to Verify AI Can Access Your llms.txt

After creating your file:

  1. 1. Visit yourstore.com/llms.txt in a browser, confirm it loads as plain text
  2. 2. Check that it returns a 200 status code (not a redirect to your homepage)
  3. 3. Verify your robots.txt doesn't block the llms.txt path
  4. 4. Test in an incognito window to make sure there's no login wall

Then wait. AI models recrawl sites regularly, and your llms.txt will be picked up within 1-2 weeks. You can speed this up by submitting your URL to Google Search Console for indexing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is llms.txt an official standard?

It's an emerging convention, not a formal specification like robots.txt. However, it's been adopted by enough websites and recognized by enough AI systems that it provides measurable benefits. The format was proposed by the AI developer community and continues to evolve.

Will llms.txt hurt my SEO?

No. The file is a plain text document that search engines can index normally. It's additional content about your business, which can only help. It doesn't replace or interfere with any existing SEO elements.

Do all AI assistants use llms.txt?

Not all AI assistants explicitly look for llms.txt yet, but the ones that crawl the web (including Perplexity and Google's AI) will find and process it. As the convention grows, more AI systems are incorporating it into their evaluation of websites.

How long should my llms.txt be?

Aim for 500-2000 words. Long enough to be comprehensive, short enough to be processed efficiently. If you need more space, create an llms-full.txt for the extended version.

Can I have different llms.txt files for different languages?

Not in the standard convention. If your store serves multiple languages, include your primary language content in llms.txt and consider adding a multilingual note with links to localized versions of key pages.
