Every Shopify owner I talk to asks the same thing. Do I keep doing SEO, or do I go all-in on AI? The honest answer is neither. And the split isn't 50/50.
Here's the bottom line: SEO still pays the bills today. AEO decides whether you have a business in three years. You fund both, but you weight them by where the trend is going.
What's the actual difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO gets you ranked so a person clicks. AEO gets you cited so an AI recommends you. One aims at a results page. The other aims at an answer.
They share a foundation: clean content, real authority, structured data. The payoff surfaces are different, though, and they're diverging fast as more people ask AI instead of searching.
Why keep pouring into SEO?
Because the click is leaking out of search. Google's AI Overviews answer more queries on the page now, and shoppers increasingly ask ChatGPT or Perplexity rather than opening a store.
I watched this happen once already. In 2013 organic Facebook reach quietly died and I kept making "better content" for a channel that had stopped delivering. The traffic didn't crash. It bled. AEO is the hedge against the same slow bleed in search.
So what's the split for 2026?
Roughly 60% of new effort on AEO, 40% on maintaining SEO. Never zero on SEO. You don't torch a channel that still converts.
But every new piece you make should be built to be cited, not only ranked. Direct answers up top. FAQ blocks. Named sources. Structured data. That content works for both surfaces, which is the point.
What does AEO-first content look like in practice?
Lead with the answer in the first two sentences. Structure the page so a machine can lift a clean quote. Mark up your facts so an assistant trusts them.
A page built this way still ranks on Google. It also gets pulled into an AI answer, which a page written only for keywords rarely does. You are not choosing between them. You build for the harder surface and get the easier one for free.
How do you know if it's working?
Stop looking only at rankings. Ask the assistants directly. Query ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI for your category every couple of weeks and note whether you're named.
That mention is the new ranking. We don't change until the pain of staying the same is worse than the pain of change. Start measuring now, so the pain shows up as data instead of a lost quarter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should a Shopify store prioritize AEO or SEO in 2026?
Weight new effort toward AEO, roughly 60% AEO, 40% SEO maintenance, without abandoning SEO, which still converts today. Build every new page to be cited by AI (direct answers, FAQ blocks, named sources, structured data), and it will rank on Google as a byproduct while also getting pulled into AI answers.
Is SEO dead for ecommerce?
No, but the click is leaking. AI Overviews answer more queries on the page and more shoppers ask ChatGPT or Perplexity directly, so organic clicks bleed slowly rather than crash. Keep maintaining SEO, but stop making it the whole strategy.
Can one piece of content work for both AEO and SEO?
Yes, and that's the goal. A page that leads with a direct answer, uses FAQ structure, cites named sources, and includes structured data gets pulled into AI answers and still ranks in traditional search. Content written only for keywords rarely earns the AI citation.
