Should Shopify stores spend on AEO or SEO in 2026?
Put 60 to 70 percent of your budget into AEO and the rest into the SEO that already earns. Answer engines now sit between your product and the buyer, and that is where the next wave of traffic decides what to recommend. SEO still matters. It just stopped being the whole game.
Here's the thing. Most store owners I talk to are still spending like it's 2021.
They pay for backlinks and blog posts aimed at ranking on page one of Google. Meanwhile their customers are asking ChatGPT and Perplexity what to buy, and those tools never show them the store.
Why is search traffic drying up for Shopify stores?
Because people stopped clicking. Google's AI Overviews answer the question on the results page, so the user gets what they need and never visits a site. The traffic is still happening. The click is gone.
Pew Research studied this in 2025 and found that users click a link on just 8 percent of searches that show an AI summary, compared to 15 percent without one. That's roughly half the clicks, wiped out by one feature. You can read the Pew breakdown here.
I've watched this play out in client analytics all year. Organic sessions flat or down. Conversion rate steady. Revenue holding only because the buyers who do arrive are further along in the decision.
Same story. Different channel.
What does AEO actually do for a product store?
AEO gets your products named inside the answer. When a shopper asks an AI assistant for the best waterproof hiking boots under $150, answer-engine optimization is the work that makes your boot the one it lists, with your store as the source.
The mechanics are different from SEO. AI assistants pull from structured product data, clear specs, and content that reads like a direct answer. They favor pages with schema, clean feeds, and plain language over keyword-stuffed blog filler.
Shopify has leaned into this hard. Their structured data documentation walks through the product markup that AI crawlers read first. If your feed is a mess, no amount of content fixes it.
OpenAI also opened checkout inside ChatGPT in 2025 through its agentic commerce work. The buyer can now complete the purchase without ever touching your storefront. That changes where your money should go.
So how should I actually split the budget?
Start with a 65/35 split. Most of the money funds AEO: product schema, feed cleanup, FAQ content written as direct answers, and getting cited by the sources AI models trust. The rest protects the SEO that already converts.
Don't kill SEO. That would be a mistake.
Your branded search, your highest-converting category pages, and the long-tail terms that still send buyers are worth defending. Keep them healthy. Stop pouring new money into ranking blog posts that chase traffic the click no longer delivers.
Here is one way to split it:
- AEO (65%): product data structure, schema markup, answer-style content, review signals, and citations from sites AI models quote.
- SEO (35%): technical health, branded terms, proven category and product pages, and site speed.
If your store sells considered purchases, where people research before buying, push the AEO number higher. Those shoppers live in AI chats now.
How do I know if AEO is working?
Ask the assistants directly. Type your core buying questions into ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity once a week and track whether your store shows up and gets cited. If you're not named, you're not in the running.
We ran this on a client's outdoor gear store last quarter. At the start, they appeared in zero of twelve target prompts. After eight weeks of feed and schema work, they showed in seven. Referral traffic from Perplexity tripled off a tiny base, but the buyers converted at nearly double the site average.
Small numbers. Real buyers. That's the shape of this shift right now.
What happens if I ignore AEO and just keep doing SEO?
You keep winning a game fewer people play. Traditional SEO will hold your branded traffic and some long-tail terms, but the top-of-funnel discovery that used to feed your store is moving into AI answers you're absent from.
Gartner projected traditional search volume would drop 25 percent by 2026 as users shift to AI assistants and chatbots. The buyers aren't gone. They're asking somewhere else, and the store that answers gets the sale.
There are very few stores doing this work well right now. That gap is the opportunity. The ones who set up clean product data and answer-ready content this year get named while their competitors are still buying backlinks.
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO dead for Shopify stores in 2026?
No. SEO still protects branded search and converts buyers on your proven category and product pages. It stopped being the main source of new discovery, so it should hold a smaller share of the budget than it did two years ago.
How much should a small Shopify store spend on AEO?
Start with 60 to 65 percent of your search budget on AEO. For small stores, most of that is cheap or free work: cleaning the product feed, adding schema markup, and rewriting key pages as direct answers. The cost is time more than money.
What's the first AEO fix that moves the needle?
Fix your product structured data. AI assistants read schema and feeds before anything else, so clean, complete product markup is what gets your items pulled into answers. It's the highest-return fix for the least work.
Can AEO and SEO use the same content?
Partly. Good AEO content reads as a clear, direct answer to a real buying question, which also helps SEO. The difference is structure and schema. AEO leans on machine-readable data and plain answers over keyword density.
How fast does AEO show results?
Expect six to ten weeks to see your store start appearing in AI answers after feed and schema work, based on what we've tracked across client stores. Referral volume starts small, but those buyers tend to convert well because they arrive ready to purchase.
Where to start
The split is simple. The work is specific. If you want a store that gets named inside AI answers and sells through agentic checkout, that's the whole focus of what we build.
