AEO versus SEO is the wrong fight. You need both. The real question is where your next hour of work goes.
SEO earns you a spot in a list of blue links. AEO earns you a mention inside the answer an AI gives before anyone sees a link. Those are different jobs, and most Shopify stores are still spending all their effort on one.
Here's how I'd split it for 2026.
What's the actual difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO optimizes to rank a page in search results. AEO optimizes to get your brand and products cited inside AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews.
The mechanics differ. SEO rewards keywords, links, and page authority. AEO rewards structured data, direct-answer formatting, and citable facts an AI can lift into a response.
Google itself now shows AI Overviews above the classic links. Google's own writeup on AI in Search lays out how those answers get built. The zero-click answer is the new front page.
Why can't you just keep doing SEO?
Because a growing share of searches never produce a click. The answer sits at the top, and the shopper reads it without visiting anyone. If you're not in the answer, you're invisible for that query.
I lived a version of this in ecommerce. Facebook changed its algorithm and buried my organic reach overnight. My online sales went from 50,000 dollars a month to 2,000. I refused to adapt for two years and watched competitors lap me.
The pattern with AI search is the same slow burn. A little less click-through each quarter. Then one day the traffic is gone and the stores that adapted early own the answer.
Where should Shopify stores actually spend effort in 2026?
Split it roughly 60/40 in favor of AEO on new work, while protecting the SEO you already have. Keep your rankings healthy, but pour new effort into being citable.
On the AEO side: complete product schema, FAQ blocks with real questions, direct-answer paragraphs, and a clean product feed. On the SEO side: keep technical health, internal links, and content depth intact so you don't lose ground.
Read that again. You're not abandoning SEO. You're adding the layer that lets AI cite you, because that's where the discovery is moving.
What does AEO work look like on a Shopify store?
It starts with data. Fill every feed field, add Product schema with real values, and make sure your key pages answer questions in the first sentence, not the fifth paragraph.
Then format for extraction. Question-style headings. Short, quotable answers. FAQ sections marked up with FAQPage schema. AI systems lift clean, self-contained facts, so give them clean, self-contained facts.
Semrush and other trackers have started reporting on AI Overview visibility as its own metric. Semrush's research is a decent place to watch how this shift is measured.
How do you measure whether AEO is working?
Ask the assistants directly. Run your target questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews and note whether your brand or products get mentioned. That's your mention rate.
Track it over time the same way you track rankings. If your mention rate climbs while your competitors stay flat, your AEO work is compounding.
Here's the bottom line: SEO keeps you in the index. AEO keeps you in the answer. In 2026, the answer is where the shopper looks first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AEO adds a layer on top of SEO. You still need strong technical SEO and content to rank, but AEO is what gets you cited inside AI-generated answers, which is increasingly where discovery starts.
How should I split my budget between AEO and SEO?
Protect your existing SEO health, then bias new effort roughly 60/40 toward AEO. That means investing in structured data, direct-answer content, and feed quality while keeping rankings and technical health intact.
Does AEO help my Google rankings too?
Often, yes. Clean structured data, FAQ schema, and direct-answer formatting improve both AI citation odds and traditional search visibility, so much of the work does double duty.
How do I know if AEO is working?
Track your mention rate: run target questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews and record whether your brand or products appear. Watch that rate over time the way you watch keyword rankings.
