AEO vs SEO for Shopify: Where to Put Your 2026 Budget

Should Shopify stores spend on AEO or SEO in 2026?

Spend on both, but change the ratio. Keep SEO as your foundation and move a real slice of budget into Answer Engine Optimization. For most Shopify stores, 60 to 70 percent SEO and 30 to 40 percent AEO is the right split for 2026. Here's how I got to that number.

I ran a $10 million a year ecommerce brand for 15 years. I've watched Google send free traffic, then slowly take it back. What's happening right now is faster than anything I saw in that decade.

Why is Google traffic worth less than it used to be?

Because more searches end without a click. A widely cited SparkToro and Datos study found that for every 1,000 U.S. searches on Google, only around 360 clicks go to the open web. The rest go nowhere, or back into Google's own properties (SparkToro, 2024).

Then AI Overviews landed at the top of results. Pew Research tracked real browsing behavior and found that when an AI summary showed up, users clicked a regular search result 8 percent of the time, versus 15 percent when no summary appeared (Pew Research Center, 2025). Same query. Half the clicks.

Read that again. You can rank number one and still lose the click.

What is AEO and how is it different from SEO?

SEO gets your page to rank so a person clicks through. AEO gets your brand and products named inside the answer an AI assistant writes, so you show up even when nobody clicks a blue link. One chases position. The other chases the citation.

The two overlap more than people think. Assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI mode read the same web your SEO already built. Clean pages, fast load, clear structure, real schema. That work feeds both. So this isn't a fresh budget from scratch. A lot of it is redirecting effort you already spend.

Where is the buying actually happening now?

Inside the assistants. OpenAI rolled out product discovery and buying features in ChatGPT, and Shopify merchants can surface products directly in that flow through Shopify's own integrations (Shopify, 2025). Shopify also built Sidekick and its Catalog to feed AI shopping surfaces from your existing product data (Shopify Help Center).

People ask an assistant "best waterproof hiking boots under $150" and get three named picks with links. If your store isn't one of the three, you don't exist for that shopper. There's no page two to fight for. There's the answer, or there's nothing.

So where should Shopify stores put the money?

Start with a base of SEO, then add AEO in proportion to how much AI has already eaten your category. Here's the framework I use with stores.

Keep 60 to 70 percent in SEO fundamentals

SEO still drives the majority of trackable, attributable revenue for most stores today. Product page speed, clean URLs, real reviews, internal linking, category depth. This is the foundation. Kill it and you've got nothing for the assistants to read anyway.

Move 30 to 40 percent into AEO

Structured data first. Add Product, FAQ, and Organization schema so machines can parse what you sell (Google Search Central). Clean your product feed. Then write content the way people ask questions, with a direct one or two sentence answer up top that an assistant can lift word for word.

When to push AEO toward 50 percent

Check your category. If your main keywords already trigger AI Overviews and your click-through has been sliding for two quarters, the traffic is leaving whether you act or not. That's the signal to go heavier on AEO now, while most of your competitors still argue about it.

How do you measure AEO when you can't see the clicks?

You stop counting clicks and start counting mentions. Run a prompt scan every month. Take your 20 most important buying questions, run them through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, and record whether your brand gets named and linked.

That's your citation rate. Watch it climb. We track this for stores monthly, and it's the only number that tells you if the AEO work is landing. Referral traffic from AI is still messy and underreported, so the citation rate is your real scoreboard.

The honest part

I'll admit something. I had a hard time letting go of pure SEO thinking. For 15 years, rankings were the game. Ranking meant clicks, and clicks meant sales. That deal is changing.

Because an AI can answer a question. But it still has to point somewhere to let a person buy. Your job in 2026 is to be the store it points to. SEO gets you in the room. AEO gets you named in the answer. Fund both, tilt toward the answer, and check your citation rate like you'd check your revenue.

FAQ

Should a Shopify store drop SEO for AEO in 2026?

No. SEO still drives most trackable revenue and it feeds the pages AI assistants read. Keep SEO as your base and add AEO on top. The move is a shift in ratio, not a full swap.

How much of a Shopify marketing budget should go to AEO in 2026?

For most stores, put 60 to 70 percent into SEO fundamentals and 30 to 40 percent into AEO. If your category already shows heavy AI Overview coverage and few clicks, push AEO toward 50 percent.

What is the fastest AEO win for a Shopify store?

Fix your structured data. Add Product, FAQ, and Organization schema, clean your product feed, and write clear question-and-answer content an assistant can quote in one or two sentences.

How do I know if AEO is working when I can't track AI clicks?

Run monthly prompt scans across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini to check whether your brand gets mentioned and cited for your target questions. Track citation rate over time, not just referral traffic.
