Should Shopify stores spend on AEO or SEO in 2026?
Split it. Put about 60% of your organic budget into AEO and 40% into SEO if you do $500K to $10M in revenue. The traffic that used to land on page one of Google is getting answered inside AI now, so the money follows the answer.
That's the short version. Here's the reasoning.
Google confirmed AI Overviews reach more than 1.5 billion users a month, per its May 2024 Search announcement. Those answers sit above the blue links. People read them and stop.
I've watched this happen in client dashboards for a year. Impressions hold steady. Clicks fall off a cliff. Same story. Different quarter.
What's actually different between AEO and SEO?
SEO gets your store ranked so a human clicks through. AEO gets your store named inside the answer an AI gives, so the machine cites you whether or not anyone clicks. One chases position. The other chases the citation.
SEO still runs on the old rules. Title tags, backlinks, page speed, keyword coverage. That machinery works and it isn't going anywhere fast.
AEO runs on structure a model can read and trust. Clean product schema. Answer-shaped content. Third-party mentions the model already saw during training or retrieval. Shopify's own docs on structured data and metadata cover the base layer most stores skip.
Here's the part people miss. AEO doesn't replace SEO. A lot of the same signals feed both. But the outcome you're buying is different, so the budget can't be a straight copy of your 2022 plan.
Where is the traffic really going?
ChatGPT crossed 800 million weekly users in 2025, per OpenAI's own reporting. Perplexity keeps growing. Gemini sits inside every Google product a Shopify customer already uses.
When someone asks one of these tools "what's the best organic baby formula" they get three brand names and a short reason for each. No ten blue links. Three names.
If your store is one of those three, you win the sale before the shopper ever opens a browser tab. If you're not, you don't even get the chance to compete on price or photos.
That's the whole thing shifting under us. The click is optional now. The mention is not.
So what's the actual budget split?
Base case for a $500K to $10M Shopify store: 60% AEO, 40% SEO. Shift that ratio based on where you are, not on hype.
If you're under $1M and unknown, go 50/50. You need foundational SEO to exist at all. A model can't cite a store it has never seen ranked, linked, or mentioned anywhere.
If you're $2M to $10M with strong existing rankings, push to 65% AEO. You already own the SEO base. The growth now comes from getting named inside AI answers, and almost nobody in your category is working that angle yet.
If you sell something people research hard before buying, supplements, skincare, gear, weight AEO even heavier. Those are exactly the questions people bring to ChatGPT.
One rule stays fixed. Never drop SEO below 30%. Google's own guidance in the helpful content documentation still shapes what gets surfaced, and AI Overviews pull from pages that rank. Kill your SEO and you starve your AEO too.
What does the AEO 60% actually buy?
Not a mystery. Concrete work.
Product and collection schema that's complete and accurate, so a model reads your catalog without guessing. Most Shopify stores I audit have half-filled or missing structured data. We ran this check on a client's store in July. Forty percent of their products had no schema at all.
Content written as answers to real questions, matched to how people ask AI, not how they type into a search bar. A comparison page. A buyer's guide. A straight "best X for Y" piece with your product in it.
Third-party citations. Reviews, roundups, mentions on sites the model already trusts. This is the slow, unsexy part. It's also what moves the needle most, because a model weighs what others say about you more than what you say about yourself.
An llms.txt file and a feed structure that lets AI shopping tools read your inventory cleanly. Small file. Real effect.
How fast should you expect results?
SEO takes three to six months to show real movement. AEO is faster on the schema side, sometimes weeks, and slower on the citation side, sometimes a quarter or more. Plan for a full quarter before you judge either.
Track two numbers. First, are you getting named in AI answers for your money questions? Run the prompts yourself weekly and write down who gets mentioned. Second, is AI-referred traffic converting? It usually converts higher, because the shopper arrives half-sold.
Don't judge AEO by clicks alone. A lot of its value shows up as brand searches and direct visits after someone saw your name in an answer and looked you up later. That's real revenue that no click attribution will ever cleanly show you.
FAQ
Is SEO dead for Shopify stores in 2026?
No. SEO still feeds AI Overviews and still drives direct clicks. It's the foundation AEO stands on. Keep at least 30% of your organic budget on it. What's dying is the assumption that ranking number one guarantees traffic.
How much should a small Shopify store spend on AEO?
If you're under $1M in revenue and not well known, start at a 50/50 split. Build SEO fundamentals and AEO structure together. A model can't cite a store that doesn't rank or get mentioned anywhere first.
What's the fastest AEO win for a Shopify store?
Fixing product and collection schema. It's often incomplete or missing, and it's the base layer AI shopping tools read. Clean structured data can show results in weeks, not months.
Can I do AEO and SEO with the same content?
Partly. Many signals overlap, so good content serves both. But AEO content is shaped as direct answers to questions people ask AI, while SEO content targets typed keywords. Write for the answer first, then handle keywords.
How do I measure if AEO is working?
Run your important buying prompts through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini every week and record who gets named. Watch for rising brand searches and direct traffic too, since much of AEO's payoff shows up there, not in trackable clicks.
Where to start
Pick your five money questions. The ones that end in a sale. Run them through the big AI tools today and see if you show up.
If you don't, you have your answer on where the budget goes.
