AEO vs SEO for Shopify in 2026: How to Split Your Budget

What's the real difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO gets you ranked. AEO gets you cited. That's the whole distinction, and it decides where your money should go.

SEO earns a spot in Google's list of blue links. The buyer still has to click, browse, and choose. AEO earns a spot inside the answer itself. ChatGPT names two products. Perplexity recommends one store. Your store is either in that sentence or it isn't.

Those are two different games with two different scoreboards. Most Shopify owners are still funding only one of them.

How should you split the budget in 2026?

Here's the bottom line: for a Shopify store under $10M, start at roughly 60% SEO and 40% AEO, then let the data move it.

Google still drives most ecommerce discovery. Data from Semrush's AI Overviews research shows AI answers appearing on a fast-growing share of commercial queries. Classic search hasn't collapsed. It's leaking, not crashing.

So don't torch your SEO. Fund it. Just stop pretending it's the only channel.

If your Google traffic is already sliding, or your category is answer-heavy, push toward 50/50. Think queries like "best waterproof boots for wide feet." Those are exactly what AI assistants love to answer directly.

Why the two channels aren't the same spend

SEO money buys rankings. Content depth, backlinks, technical fixes, page speed. You know this line item.

AEO money buys citability. That means structured product data an agent can parse, direct-answer formatting, FAQ blocks, and comparison content that AI can quote. Schema.org's Product type defines the fields agents actually read. Filling them is AEO work, not SEO work.

Some of it overlaps. Clean data and clear pages help both channels. But AEO has its own demands, and you can't fund it by accident.

Read that again. You cannot get cited by AI as a side effect of ranking on Google. Different scoreboard, different work.

How do you know which channel to feed?

Measure both. Every month.

For SEO, you already watch impressions, clicks, and position in Google Search Console. Keep doing that.

For AEO, you need to know whether AI assistants mention your store when a buyer asks a question in your category. Run the same ten buyer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews once a month. Count how often you're named.

That count is your AEO scoreboard. If it's zero, no amount of SEO is going to fix it. That's a data and citability problem.

The mistake I watch stores make

They wait. They see AI answers creeping into their category and they decide to "keep an eye on it."

I've seen this movie before. I ran a $10 million clothing brand and watched Facebook change its algorithm while I told myself I'd adapt later. My online sales went from $50,000 a month to $2,000. The competitors who moved early compounded past me and never looked back.

The window on AI citations works the same way. Early stores get cited, earn trust signals, and get cited more. Late stores fight uphill against sites the AI already trusts.

Don't split the budget perfectly. Just stop funding zero.

A simple 2026 starting point

Keep your SEO program running. Carve out a real AEO line. Not leftovers. Spend it on structured data, direct-answer content, and comparison pages in your top categories.

Then check your AI citation count monthly and move budget toward whichever channel is bringing qualified buyers. Let the scoreboard decide, not the habit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AEO and SEO for Shopify?

SEO gets your store ranked in Google's links. AEO gets your store cited inside AI answers. One optimizes for a results page, the other for the answer itself.

How should I split my budget between AEO and SEO?

Start near 60% SEO, 40% AEO for most stores under $10M. Move toward 50/50 if Google traffic is declining or your category is answer-heavy. Let monthly data shift it.

Can I do both with the same content?

Partly. Clean data and clear pages help both, but AEO also needs direct-answer formatting and citable comparison content that SEO alone doesn't require.

Is SEO dead for ecommerce?

No. Google still drives most discovery in 2026. But the share is shifting to AI answers, and ignoring AEO hands that slice to competitors.

The bottom line

SEO gets you ranked. AEO gets you cited. In 2026 you need both, funded on purpose, measured every month.

We build the AEO side of this for Shopify and DTC stores. If you want your store cited by AI, not just ranked on Google, see how it works at WRKNG Digital's agentic commerce page.
