9 Things Your Shopify Store Needs Before Agentic Checkout Goes Live

Before agentic checkout goes live, your Shopify store needs a clean machine-readable product feed, accurate real-time inventory and pricing, Product schema on every page, delegated payment support, and structured shipping and return policies. Miss any of those and the AI agent skips you and buys from the store next door.

I built a clothing company to $10 million a year and exited it. I have watched a lot of "new channels" come and go. This one is different. The agent is the customer now, and it reads data, not design. If your store is not built for a machine to buy from, you are invisible the day this goes live. Here is the full checklist.

1. A Machine-Readable Product Feed

Connect a structured product feed before you do anything else, because that feed is what an agent reads instead of your pretty homepage. OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol and Shopify's Catalog both run on feed data, not on your theme. No feed, no visibility.

2. Product Schema on Every PDP

Add Product schema with price, availability, GTIN, and brand to every product page. Agents and AI shopping surfaces parse that markup to confirm what you sell and what it costs. A page without it is a blank page to a machine.

3. Real-Time Inventory and Pricing Accuracy

Your stock levels and prices have to be correct to the minute. An agent that buys an out-of-stock item or an old price creates a failed order and a refund, and those failures get your store down-ranked fast. Data does not lie, and a bad feed tells a bad story about your business.

4. Delegated Payment Token Support

Enable delegated payment tokens so an agent can pay without handling raw card data. Stripe's Shared Payment Token, built with OpenAI, is what moves the money inside the Agentic Commerce Protocol. Visa Intelligent Commerce and Mastercard's Agent Pay are doing the same thing on the card rails.

5. Structured Shipping and Return Policies

Publish your shipping cost, delivery window, and return window as structured data, not buried in a footer link. Agents read those fields to decide if your offer beats the next store's. Vague policies read as risk, and risk loses the sale.

6. Reviews and Ratings in Schema

Mark up your reviews and star ratings with AggregateRating so agents can weigh social proof. When two stores sell the same product at the same price, the one with 4.8 stars and real review counts wins. The agent picks the safer buy every time.

7. AI Crawler Access and an llms.txt File

Let the AI crawlers in and give them a map. Confirm you are not blocking OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, and Google-Extended in your robots.txt, then add an llms.txt file pointing to your key product and policy pages. Block the crawler and you block the customer.

8. Clean Variant and SKU Data

Every size, color, and option needs its own correct SKU, price, and stock count. Agents buy specific variants, so a messy variant setup means the agent orders the wrong thing or gives up. One shared SKU across five colors is a guaranteed failed order.

9. A Fast, Stable Storefront API

Your storefront and Shopify Storefront API have to respond fast and stay up, because the agent transacts in milliseconds and will not wait. Slow or flaky endpoints get dropped mid-checkout. Speed is now a conversion factor you cannot see on a screen, and the agent never tells you why it left.

How We Chose This List

We pulled these nine from the live Agentic Commerce Protocol spec published by OpenAI and Stripe, Shopify's own agentic storefront docs, and the readiness gaps we find auditing real stores. Every item is something that breaks a real agent transaction when it is missing.

FAQ

What is Shopify agentic checkout?

Agentic checkout lets an AI agent discover, add to cart, and pay for a product on a shopper's behalf without that person ever touching your site. On Shopify it runs through the Agentic Commerce Protocol that OpenAI and Stripe published in 2025.

Do I need to turn agentic checkout on manually?

Yes. You opt in through your Shopify admin and connect a feed. An agent cannot transact against your store until you enable it and your product data passes validation.

Will agentic checkout hurt my brand or margins?

Only if your data is wrong. Agents buy on price, availability, and reviews. A store with clean feeds and accurate stock wins the sale. A messy one gets skipped.

How do I know if my store is ready?

Run through the nine items above. If your feed, schema, inventory, payments, policies, reviews, crawler access, variants, and API all check out, you are ready to flip it on.
