What should you recheck in Shopify after the 2026 Winter update?
Recheck your structured data output, AI crawler permissions, and canonical settings first. Those three control whether AI assistants can read and cite your products. Here are the nine settings that move after a platform update, in order of impact.
I've had a hard time trusting defaults. Every big release quietly resets something I thought was locked in. Last winter's update stripped custom schema off a client's entire catalog, and nobody noticed for three weeks. The Winter update is no different. Go through this list.
1. Structured data output in your theme
Check whether your theme still outputs valid Product JSON-LD with price, availability, and review fields. Theme updates reset this constantly. Run every product template through Google's Rich Results Test and confirm no errors.
2. Product metafields mapped to schema
Open Settings, then Custom data, and confirm your metafields still feed into your structured data. The update can break the connection between a metafield and the schema field it populates. Missing brand, GTIN, or condition data makes your products harder for AI to match.
3. Robots.txt and AI crawler access
Shopify lets you edit robots.txt.liquid, and updates can revert custom rules to default. Confirm you are not blocking the crawlers you want, including GPTBot and Google-Extended, per Shopify's robots.txt documentation. If an AI crawler can't reach you, you don't exist to it.
4. Canonical URL settings
Verify your canonical tags still point to the primary product URL, not a variant or collection path. Updates sometimes change how variant URLs resolve, which splits your signals. Google's canonicalization guide explains why one clean canonical per product matters.
5. Markets and multi-currency price feeds
If you sell internationally, confirm Shopify Markets is still passing correct prices into your structured data per region. A reset here shows the wrong currency or a stale price to AI assistants. Wrong price data is worse than no price data.
6. Image alt text and media settings
Check that product image alt text survived the update and that new media compression settings didn't strip descriptive text. Alt text is how AI understands what a product looks like without seeing it. Thin alt text means weak visual context.
7. Sitemap and indexing controls
Confirm your sitemap.xml still lists active products and that no collection got flagged noindex during the update. Then resubmit it in Google Search Console to force a recrawl. A dropped sitemap entry is a page that quietly goes invisible.
8. Checkout and agentic commerce permissions
The Winter release expanded agent-driven checkout options, so check Settings for any new permissions controlling whether AI agents can transact on your store. The Schema.org Offer type is what agents read to confirm a product is buyable. If the permission is off, you miss agentic sales entirely.
9. App permissions after the update
Review your installed apps and confirm none lost the permissions they need to inject schema or manage SEO fields. Updates can revoke scopes and silently break a working setup. One disabled app can take your structured data down across every product.
How we chose this list
We ranked these nine by impact on AI visibility across live Shopify stores we manage, starting with the settings that break citation first. Structured data, crawler access, and canonical signals sit at the top because AI reads those before anything else. Everything below them is a multiplier on those three.
FAQ
How do I know if the Winter update broke something?
Run your top product pages through Google's Rich Results Test and check Search Console for new coverage errors. A spike in schema warnings or dropped pages right after the release is the signal.
Does a Shopify platform update change my structured data?
It can. Theme updates and new default settings often alter how product schema renders. Revalidate your JSON-LD in Google's Rich Results Test after any major release.
Why does AI visibility depend on Shopify settings?
AI assistants read your structured data, crawler permissions, and canonical signals to understand and cite your products. If an update resets those, your pages get harder for AI to parse. Clean settings are the difference between getting named in an answer and getting skipped.
How often should I recheck these settings?
After every major Shopify release, plus a quick monthly check. Updates can silently reset defaults that affect indexing and schema output, and the gap between the reset and the day you notice is lost visibility.
Which setting matters most for AI shopping visibility?
Structured product data. If your Product schema is missing price, availability, or reviews, AI assistants cannot confidently surface your store.
