9 Shopify Settings to Check Before AI Shopping Season in 2026

AI shopping season is the stretch where ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews do more of the deciding. If your store isn't readable to them, you miss the recommendation before a human ever sees you.

These nine settings are where I start every store audit. Check them before the traffic shifts, not after.

1. Product feed completeness

Open your product feed and look for empty fields. Material, gender, age group, color, and size are the ones stores skip most. Every blank is a shopper question you can't answer, so fill them before anything else.

2. Product JSON-LD schema

Confirm every product page outputs Product schema with real price, availability, brand, and description. A shell with empty values is worse than useless. Validate a few pages with Schema.org's validator to be sure.

3. Title specificity

Scan your product titles for vague names like "Blue Jacket." AI matches on specifics, so a title should carry the who, what, and material. "Men's Waterproof Insulated Winter Jacket" wins the match that "Blue Jacket" loses.

4. Meta descriptions

Check that your key pages have clean, human-readable meta descriptions, not empty fields or duplicated titles. These often become the snippet AI and search show. Write one clear sentence that states what the page answers.

5. FAQ blocks and FAQPage schema

Add FAQ sections with real questions on high-intent pages and mark them up with FAQPage schema. Question-and-answer content is easy for AI to lift into an answer. Keep one canonical FAQPage block per page so Google doesn't drop it.

6. Boilerplate-to-content ratio

Look at how much of your page HTML is navigation, popups, and app scripts versus real copy. When boilerplate dominates, AI has to dig for the substance. Trim what you can and push substantive text higher up the page.

7. Inventory and pricing accuracy

Make sure availability and price update in real time. AI and agents that get stale data abandon the recommendation and learn not to trust your feed. Accurate stock status is a trust signal, not a detail.

8. Canonical tags and duplicate content

Confirm each important page has a canonical tag and you're not shipping duplicate schema blocks. Duplicate FAQPage or HowTo entries cause Google to drop both from rich results. Keep one clean version per type.

9. Catalog connection to AI platforms

If your plan supports connecting your Shopify catalog to partners like OpenAI, confirm it's on and your feed is complete first. The connection only carries the data you've actually filled in. Fix the feed, then open the pipe.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is AI shopping season?

It's less a fixed date and more the ongoing shift where AI assistants handle more product discovery, peaking around major shopping periods. The point is to be readable before that traffic moves, not after.

Which setting matters most?

Product feed completeness. Missing attributes are the top reason AI can't match your products to shopper questions, so start there before schema or connections.

Do I need a developer to fix these?

Some, like schema and canonical tags, may need theme edits. Many, like feed fields and meta descriptions, you can fix directly in Shopify's admin.

Will these changes help human shoppers too?

Yes. Clear titles, accurate inventory, and clean descriptions improve conversion for humans and readability for AI at the same time.
