Before the 2026 holiday rush, check these nine Shopify settings: product JSON-LD schema, your product feed, metafields, shipping and returns text, real-time inventory, crawler access, checkout config, review schema, and page speed. Get these right and AI shopping assistants can actually find and recommend your store. Get them wrong and you're invisible.
More people are buying through AI assistants than ever. Shoppers ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity what to buy, and those tools only recommend stores they can read. If your store isn't readable to them, you don't exist in that conversation. Here's the checklist.
1. Product structured data (JSON-LD) on every product page
Every product page needs valid Product schema with price, availability, brand, and GTIN. This is the number one thing AI assistants read to understand what you sell. Run each template through Schema.org's validator and fix every error before Black Friday.
2. Your product feed in Shopify Markets and sales channels
Your product feed is the master file AI shopping tools pull from. Confirm it's live, complete, and updating in the Google and Meta channels inside Shopify. Check that titles, images, and prices match your live pages. A stale feed means AI recommends products you no longer stock, and that kills trust at checkout.
3. Metafields for specs, materials, and use cases
Metafields let you add structured details like fabric, dimensions, and compatibility that a title alone can't carry. AI assistants match shoppers to products on these exact attributes. Fill them out per Shopify's metafields documentation instead of burying specs in a paragraph.
4. Shipping and returns policies as readable text
Write your shipping cutoffs and return window as plain text on the page, not locked inside an image or a PDF. AI assistants quote these directly when a shopper asks "will it arrive by Christmas?" If a bot can't read it, it won't recommend you.
5. Real-time inventory and availability signals
Your availability status has to be accurate and reflected in your schema and feed. AI assistants filter out anything marked out of stock. During a holiday rush your inventory changes by the hour, so verify the sync is real-time, not once a day.
6. robots.txt and llms.txt access for AI crawlers
Check your robots.txt isn't blocking the crawlers behind AI assistants, and add an llms.txt file that points them to your key pages. Shopify lets you edit robots.txt through robots.txt.liquid, so review it per Shopify's robots.txt guide. One wrong disallow line can hide your whole catalog.
7. Checkout and Shop Pay configuration for agentic buying
Agentic checkout is here, and AI agents now complete purchases on a shopper's behalf. Make sure Shop Pay and Shopify's checkout are fully enabled so an agent can finish the sale without friction. Google detailed this direction in its Shopping and AI announcements.
8. Product reviews with review schema
Reviews are social proof AI assistants weigh heavily when ranking options. Make sure your review app outputs valid AggregateRating and Review schema, not just pretty stars on the page. Confirm the star count and review total render in the page source, not only in a JavaScript widget. No schema means the reviews you worked for stay invisible to AI.
9. Page speed and Core Web Vitals
Slow pages get crawled less and convert worse, and that hurts you in AI recommendations too. Test your top templates in Google PageSpeed Insights and clear the Core Web Vitals thresholds. Cut heavy apps and oversized images before traffic spikes.
How We Chose This List
These nine came from auditing live Shopify stores and mapping what AI shopping assistants actually read before they recommend a product. Each item is something you can check yourself today and fix before the holiday traffic hits.
FAQ
What is a Shopify AI readiness checklist?
It's a set of settings and configs, like product schema, feed, and crawler access, that determine whether AI shopping assistants can find, read, and recommend your store. Getting them right makes your products visible in AI-generated answers.
When should I finish this checklist for the 2026 holiday season?
Finish before early November. AI assistants need time to crawl and index your updated pages, so last-minute fixes on Black Friday won't show up in time.
Does structured data really affect AI shopping recommendations?
Yes. Product JSON-LD is the primary way AI assistants understand price, availability, and product details. Missing or broken schema is the most common reason a store gets skipped.
Can I do this without a developer?
Most items, like metafields, policy text, reviews, and feed checks, are done in the Shopify admin. Schema edits and robots.txt tweaks may need a developer or a theme app, but you can audit all nine yourself first.
